In days past many larger fire (and police departments) issued command vehicles on rank - a "class system," if you will. It was not uncommon for chiefs to have Cadillacs or Lincolns.

Take Chicago, for instance: Up through the 1970s, a battalion chief would have a Ford or Chevrolet, the next rank up would have a Pontiac, next up an Olds, then a Buick, and so forth. The commissioner had several limousines over the years including this '57 Fleetwood 75. Now owned by a friend of Jim Jordan, it has a Mars siren as did the rest of the fleet:

It was replaced in 1970 by this one:

'58 Superior from Wheaton, MD. Any other shots of this Mr. Lichtman?
But of course.... These shots are isolated from scans of fleet photos from the era. They only had the one '58.

Wheaton had a mix of Cadillacs and other brands, so we'll save the Caddies for this thread and the Pontiacs & Oldsmobiles for another. I've thrown in a '63 Superior (one of a pair) and a '67 M-M (another loner) from Wheaton as well.

All photos from the WVRS website.

How has Virgle Onnen's incredible '57 Eureka not been added to this thread yet?

That is one beautiful Ambulance. I couldn't help but notice the third "hood ornament" which appears to have been added between the original two. On cars like this I always wonder if there is a story behind additions like this, like was the third piece added years ago to differentiate the front end from the 1957 of another firm, or was it added simply out of preference by the owner?

ED, its a 61. The easiest way to tell between a 61 and 62 is the turning signal lamps, and tail lights. 61 they are round, 62 are rectangle.

The '57 was formerly owned by Pittsburgh-area PCS member, the late John Schmidt. I believe he sold it to Tim Fantin and now it's owned by Virgle. Glad it has a good home, it's a very nice car. I think the '61 was also John Schmidt's.

John had a thing for "Eur-eck-as". :pat:

Steve Lichtman--------------You are correct that John Schmidt owned the 57. I bought the ambulance from him. Tim Fantin was not involved. John added the third hood ornament. The ambulance is now in Blythville,Ark. at my sons house. The 61 combo was also owned by John at one time--then went to Bill Marcy--then came to me.

It was time to move the 57 along to my son and grandson--they also have a 55 Cadillac flower car that I had. Now they both have a car to drive.:smiley3:
