That looks like a 77 Superior Sovereign combination sitting beside it.

Dwayne, that S&S sure is a beauty and even has the "year marks" on th hood. However, the landau bows are up side down. I believe they have self-tapping screws behind the knobs and can be easily reversed and placed into their proper (factory-fitted) positions. At any rate, a real attractive car.

see how we get into discussions here. are they ups side down or fliped from left to right. I beleve the knob in the center goes down but the arm goes up in front and down in the rear. S&S are the only ones that do the right and left thing. I don't want to walk out and look to see is the leaves on the cb have a top and bottom to them. but just like hugger orang I could be wrong again. eather way it's a sharp car. the light in the shop sure made it look yellow. :stars:

Yes the landau bars are on the wrong sides, which is why they are the opposite of the way they're supposed to be in their shape. It would be easy enough to fix IF the previous owner hadn't had a new PADDED vynl top installed... and they cut the padding away behind the landau bars... and cut about 50 little slits IN the material on each side to transfer the shape of where the landau bars will lay before cutting out the foam. So in short I have nicely recessed landau bars that are wrong, and like 100 little slits under them siliconed shut. There's no way to reverse them on this padded top. After recovering from working on this ambulance i'm going to hit up Accubuilt & see if they'll tear it all off & redo it right... heard they do this during slower times at the plant... oh and after drooling over Brad Ross's all white Superior hearse again... the S&S will be ALL white when it's redone right! Yeah Ed the S&S does look yellow when looking through the glass of the ambulance combined with poor flourescent lighting. You have a sharp eye spotting it back in it's corner in that ambulance picture!

Oh yes we discussed this before did we not. the padded top making it not worth the change. I did check on the bars on the 72 they are right an left to the leaves point up and have a bottom on them. so one could get them on upside down to.

Yes we all need to remember this lesson learned the hard way... whenever you have your vynl top replaced, keep a close eye on the installer & make sure they put the landau bars on right.
This portion of the thread has me seriously considering approaching Accubuilt to see if they do indeed replace vynl tops on older coaches they originally built, having it totally replaced in white.

any one of the upholstery shops in town can do it for you. it's a tad expensive but no more then getting the top painted. you can decide then if you want to go padded or not. but first before I went to that expense I would try to redo the sides. with the pad most of the time being a layer of form , I would think you could lift it up to were the bars were, pad that hole and re stretch the sail panel down. the bars go on with a nut and are fairly flimsy things. they would not have any problem taking a set in the pad. or you could cut them in the right way if you wanted. be a whole lot cheaper and if you have trouble you were going to change it anyway. bring it out well do it tomorrow.

Ed, unfortunately this top has to be torn off. Re-padding it could be done by someone like you with the experience, but there's about 50 little slits in the material on each side this is how they transferred the image of the landau bars. The vynl top shop in Florida had no morals at all... I removed the landau bars after getting it home & ALL the slits were open... so every time the car was washed or out in the rain the top was taking on water under the landau bars. They are all RTV siliconed shut now but it really needs to be stripped off & redone. Most of the siliconed holes would be seen with the landau arches installed correctly.

Why do the landau bars get mounted upside down so much? On my hearse they were on the wrong side and upside down. I have noticed a lot of hearse with this.

no one can remember how they go and they fit either way. that's way they end up misplaced.
I can't believe they did that to the top. they could have put the padding on, mounted the bars and then marked around them. took the bars back off remover the padding from there mark. put the top on. then heated the materal with the hair drier befor putting the bars back on. the bar would have streached the top. no need to cut it to get it to lay down. your stuck now. leave it till you can't stand the black and ask around before dropping it off to be replaced. it runs around a grand. here at least your spot may be different.

Youtube ambulance

Here is a raw "freeway @ 65mph" video Todd took while we were leaving Goodguys Columbus last weekend. I was "rescueing" my mom from the show since dad's '36 Ford steering column smoked & it wouldn't start. It was also my daughter's first trip sitting in one of the attendant's seats. Thanks for the video Todd!

movin or sittin still

Dwayne,
You know you have a great coach when it looks good moving or sitting still. Some of you guys are going to convert me to wanting a straight ambulance!
Thanks to Todd for the video.
Mike
