Keeping up with Ron?

One thing nice about a combo car! You can remove the lights if need be! Around here I keep the lights on the car most of the time and don't give it any thought and have never had any troubles. Besides the car and I are well known around here to! But when I'm on the road in the combo I do remove all the ambulance regalia for a trip so there is no issue with any lawmen! When I reach my destination, I'll re-rig the car up as an ambulance!:drive2:
 
Case in point, couple weeks ago we went down to Sugar Creek for a cruise in. We took the 76 Cadillac M-M combo which is brown, but as everybody knows my cars are always in ambulance mode so my suction cupped AMBULANCE grills were in the windows. Driving in I actually heard people start to go "ewww, Oh it's and ambulance, cool!" Amazing! If it was a hearse it was creepy, if it was an ambulance it was cool. PEOPLE IT IS THE SAME FREAKIN CAR! :14_6_20: People never fail to amaze me with their stupidity.
First off I really want an ambulance. I think "normal" people should be more freaked out over ambulances as there was body fluid the back and people have more likely to die in a ambulance than a hearse. In a hearse people are already dead and should not be "leaking". Exception would be a first call car, which my hearse was used as at the last funeral home.
Only once have the cops been around because of me having a hearse. I was at the girls house that was making my curtains. My hearse was parked at beside the road. We were in her driveway that was down a hill. We saw one police car and then another. We walked up the driveway and there were two officers there. They told us that someone called and said there was some people looking at a body in the back of a hearse. One of the officers looked at my friend and said, "I know you from the haunted mill". We all thought it was funny.

Everything that needed attention to make it safe & dependable is done. Brakes are excellent, rides much better with 60psi in the air shocks (ran all new lines today), license plate light fixed, tuned up, fluids changed.
Would this have hardened valve seats or should I be running lead additive until the heads are pulled later on?
 
That is a nice fire truck. Josh, you make perfect sense in your analogy of blood bourne pathogens, makes perfect sense. I guess they view an ambulance as a cheater of death and a hearse is match lost.
 
Just so you know, the hanging hooks are not original, they weren't threaded.

Uh, come to think of it they aren't even Superior style. It looks more like a copy of M-M and C/B hardware. Superior had the retractable hooks.
 
Relax guys they're made of "all-thread" it's threaded round stock for hanging electrical unistrut. Until some originals are found these will have to do. Good eye though everyone!

From what I remember, GM was already using hardened valve seats in almost everything by 1962, except for the 6 cylinder engines. Usually there is sufficient lead coating on the valves and seats to compensate for any non leaded gasoline that you would be using. The bigger problem is finding higher octane gasoline so there isn't any premature detonation in the cylinders. I suggest that you retard the timing slightly in this hot weather. On a hot day, my Corvair Spyder pings under light acceleration, but in the fall and spring, when the air is cool and damp, it will run with full boost without any noticeable pinging. The same with the Chrysler.
 
you have a extra one in there? can't see but if you ran three rods down you should only have two. were the roof mounts in place when you got the car?. the question is asked because they would be ones used in the removable rod style . some had the smooth steel rods with the j on each end that had been dipped in rubber. the ends pointed in opposite directions. so that they would not jump off. the one Collins van we had used them. your home made ones are pretty close to the right style for that mount. but the stretcher should be held on with 4 points not 5. we'll have to go back to the pictures that Tony had to see what was in it to start with. nothig liek bring one back to life is there.
 
Original or not and I believe they are not, they are one hell of a good duplication.
 
from looking at the Pictures Tony posted the front mounts are there. I would guess that the roof mounts were the same also so this car did not have the retractable hangers. the rods would be right. so a 1/4 inch Stainless steel rod small j on one end for the roof. large on the other facing the opiset direction for the streacher. is what it world have had. and the ready bolts are a good reproduction till one can aquair the rods. but it would have only had the 4 rods. I'm not sure what the front mounts would be used for. but some one out there has worked out of one of these and should know.
 
Ed, I think they are using 5 because that cot (or backboard) is very long (as long as the gurney) & this may be for extra support. The chrome bars in the side windows (2 on each side) have hooks made into them but the cot extends WAY ahead of them... so that's probably why there's 2 roof hangers near the front on each side & only 1 roof hanger @ the back I'll take better pix before work today. Yes this setup was in the car when I bought it & all the roof hanger mounts appear to be original.

Paul, that's exactly why I asked if the '66 429 had hardened valve seats! Noticed yesterday that under light acceleration that there's some "spiking" or pinging ever-so-slightly in the valves, noticeable to the ear & I don't want to hurt it. Was wondering if higher octane, lead additive, or timing would cure it. It was 92 yesterday & very high humidity, sure am grateful for the new radiator it never ran above 178 degrees. Thanks for the info!

Now i'm off to the garage to get some pix of the upper cot & it's configuration, will post them in a few...
 
Ok this should help, as seen in this pic at least 1/4th of the cot extends well ahead of the window hooks. The side entry doors are LONG and the pole-mounted window hooks can't support that void (the cot nearly reaches the overhead medical cabinets) and to my novice eye they do look like original placement:

Great eye you guys, yeah the "all-thread" hooks are cheesy looking but it appears to be set up as it should be? If these pix are too dark i'll pull it out of the shop & take these again in the daylight, this bay is 40' x 120' and poorly lit
 
not saying they did not use 5 but I have never seen it on any. the more you have the less stable it is. makes it harder to get to the pt and get it on and off. it does appear like that was the set up. be really awkward with a pt on it to hook 5 remember the stretcher was built to have two men carry it from the end so all it needs is 4 points. put them up closer to the weight and it would be more stable then just off the ends.
 
whats the S&S noise I see? I'm sure that mount goes there it looks made for that spot just not sure it was to hook the gurney to or not. other things could hang from it also. but till I find the rods I'll copy your design in my 53 it has the same set up. and I'm missing the rods for it to.

Oh yes agreed Ed! This would be miserable to work with for sure. Just imagine wrestling that cot up there onto the window hooks & that 3rd one too... then hooking the outside 2 hooks with a patient on the cot!
