The gentleman I purchased the 54XL from, back in 1993, who owned a small local transport service in eastern Pennsylvania at the time, told me it was his understanding that Wolfington Body Company (the Pennsylvania distributor) had originally sold the ambulance to a fire department in Laurel, MD. The lighted sign plates on both sides of the car, though blank when I acquired it, clearly bore faint remnants of the lettering "LAUREL." I attempted to make inquiries with both the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department and Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad several years ago, hoping to learn about the car's history, but came up empty.

I like this pic because it places the IH with other working vehicles of the day ( even the firetruck-- they stayed in service in many places for decades)
