Steve, checking your photo of the 58 Barnett pon. can you tell is the front of the tunnel lights are flared at he base like the ones on my 53 and Todd's 57 I can't tell from the pictures. but the Barnett's you have posted about show that they played around with different logos similar to the economy Memphis one. as this 53 I have her has one close to that also.

This car was originally owned by my family’s business, Ambulance Service Co. in Denver. Was sold to Ford County in the mid 70’s. Somehow ended up at an assessment park in Colorado Springs. Demon Dawg with the Denver Hearse Association now owns it. I can post current photos but it’s not pretty.

68 Pontiac

Joseph,
The 68 Pontiac was sold from Ford County to Tony Trenkamp (Now deceased) in Spearville, KS in the early 90's. He was a car guy, but the Pontiac was used as a work vehicle. My son bought the car from Trenkamp's estate in about 2006. It was a dusty mess and had the divider torn out of it, laying in the back of the Ambulance. The console was removed with a wiring nightmare bared.

We took the car, cleaned it up, overhauled the brakes, cleaned and sealed the gas tank, and put everything back together the way it was supposed to be. He put it on e.bay in that same year, and that is when the Amusement Park in Colo. Springs bought it.

So, that's the rest of the story. I hope that fills in the blanks for you.

Thanks,
Mike Burkhart

The small light in the grille of this very nice 1961 S/P 46" is probably a "batteries on" indicator.

The speaker on this 1967 S/P 48" is placed where it will block the beacon from the front...poor planning.

Hope that they had some lights mounted on the rear of the roof for protection. Don't think that you would of been able to see the overhead lights from the rear that well. First emergency response vehicle that I drove had lights like that and if I recall after they got old they did not rotate that quick.

The are luck to have an electronic siren when had a mechincal siren mounted under the hood.

It has removable "ambulance" inserts in the rear windows. I've only seen these full-window-sized inserts in the 1959 and 1960 Superiors. (SL collection)

A short view of a '59 with these inserts can be seen here, starting at about 0:55. The stretcher they're using is a #54-L:

Steve made mention earlier that 1971 Pontiac professional cars seem few and far between. I agree. We seem to find more '72 and '73 examples, but then 1974 goes scarce again.

Here is a very nice 1974 Superior Pontiac landau that was traded in to Northland Superior in St. Paul, MN sometime in the late 1980s. It came from Wisconsin is all I know. (Karsnia collection)

Here's a shot taken in 1963 of good-looking twin '62 Superiors from Glendora, NJ. Note the Skylighter beacons; Sireno products were very popular in this area at the time.

My '53 Barnette

My '53 Barnette combination with full-time ambulance markings/emergency equipment. This is how it appeared in 1973 and when I found it in 2004.

I drove 1959's through 1975 Pontiacs on calls. most had NO AIR! They were not as reliable and seemed to over-heat alot, no matter what. They wore out faster. the 1967-70 were the worst, and life span was three years and ready to trade. The Best ever was the 59 and 60 i used as first responders. Very impressive...until you blew a hose!:drive2:

Interesting to see that the 1970 Kamloops ambulance has red curtains.

The mod seen in the background seems to have an interesting patient compartment protruding on top og the cab.

Thanks Steve for the correction...I shoud have consulted my Superior book before guessing.

Jean-Marc...that mod is built by Wayne Corp. Basically it's the same exterior shape as their small school buses. They changed the side and rear doors and installed a pt compartment instead of row seats.

Bill
