firsts in life

it is true there is a first time for everything. I had something happen to me today that I have never seen before, only heard off. when we got the 67 I wondered just what had scared up the one wheel cover. only the right rear. it was rusty and has not changed up to today.

so decent day and all we have got this thing tuned up so we dump 20 bucks worth of high test in it and go out of town to make a highway run. it's 5 miles out to the T intersection of highways so it makes a good run out and back

made it out about 4 miles when I hear this tinny sound and loose power. or though I did as the car is slowing down but the engine is running and the speedometer is still turning at the same speed as we slow down. now what.

final cost to a stop and I'm wondering if the tyranny let go. went to put it in park and hear the gear ratcheting. get out for the walk around and don't see anything leaking out any were . got down to look under and found that what causing the hub cap wear is, when the axle slides out the skirt catches it by the hight spot of the cap.

man they have some stout skirts on a 67, it save my bacon. I have said, before you can restore one you have to find out why it was parked. sure wish who ever replaced that wheel bearing had known the right way to put the retainer on.

I am glad that you and your car survived intact! There are so many things that can go wrong on an antique vehicle and you just can't fix them all, can you?

Very happy to hear you are OK. That could have ended in so may ways of bad. A lot to be said for US Detroit build Cadillac Commercial Ch. & US Steel. Not to mention good driving, you know hear something and you stop and check it out not wait to see if the noise goes away on its own. All & all sounds like an easy fix, the skirt looks salvageable and most important driver & pass are OK.

you can't fix the ones you don't know about. it was all in all a very smooth transition from power to the rear wheels to no power. without disk brakes it took me about a mile to roll to a stop.

I thought of running out and getting a lotto ticket, but I think I have used up all my luck for awhile.

the only way this one slid out was if the lock ring was not put on properly. the only thing keeping us from wrecking or destroying more was the pin in the center of the skirt. sone times there is no luck like dumb luck.

Damn Ed, that was close, lots of real bad possibilities with this!!!! Just between you and me )and everybody else who reads this) I'd rather be lucky than good ANY day of the week!!!!

Retainer

Ed, our 1969 Cadillac Superior has the same issue going on currently. The axle backs itself out every couple hudred miles. Two different mechanics and the same thing happens. I was told it has worn axles spleens and it needed a new axle. You are saying the retainer is not being installed correctly. What is the right way to install a retainer, so I can pass on the information?

will I went on a parts hunt. if we need a bearing I would like to know were to get one. they had one on rock auto. it fits only 66-67 CC. so I have that one coming but we had to run the SS up for a computer glitch. so I checked with a old bearing store up in Rapid. they had one with out the retainer. so armed with numbers it takes a rw 509 fr national number I discover there are 3 of them in Sioux falls. some interesting pricing going on also. the one at rock auto was 50 bucks the three at the locale parts store are 80 bucks. the one I got up in Rapid was 20. there is no seal used. it's a sealed bearing with one side being rubber. they do not have it in yet. so I have no idea how this one is assembled.

but the retainer would keep the bearing on the Axel and what ever they have on the out side would keep the assembly in place. my service manual is up in the car so I'll get a good look at it tomorrow. but Mike if what they say is true switching the axles right to left might cure it. they would wear with a curl one direction at the tip of the splines. but if that were the case you would need to change spider gears also as they would be warn to. now the 69 is different as I recall it has a rear end cover not a drop in 2rd member

now then if I had just remembered pictures. this one is one Paul shared with us earlier showing the 70 to 76 number 14 is the bearing retainer. the other is the bearing I picked up in Rapid

907225 is a 1961 / 1962 Buick rear axle bearing, according to my book.

Still needing rear axle bearing SEALS for a '68 Cadillac commercial chassis/Fleetwood 75. Mine are leaking worse and worse every year. If ANYONE has any idea where to look or any other info, please get ahold of me! Been thru Hemmings and every other conceivable place to no avail.

Maybe you will come across one or two on your quests, Ed......

OK, as I said before I took bookkeeping instead of typing. I took ag instead of mechanics. Is that what is meant when it is said that young people make bad decisions? I'm glad your safe ED, but this mechanical stuff is way above my pay grade.
