Classy Cadillacs

What is with the duct tape on the Grimes lights????

"I.M. JUNQUE" was an antique business that used this girl to haul junk around to flea markets. They covered up the Ful-Vues and the 888 to keep from being ticketed. The red bulbs in the beacon were replaced with amber.

This 1967 Sovereign, ex-TCAS, is seen here as I found it for sale in Hays, KS in 1991. Note that she sports dual hanging hardware, CP25 speakers (less guts), and #176 beacons.

Superior hightops w/double tunnel lights

1976 54" - Holley, NY
1972 51" - Horsham, PA

The Horsham rig appears to have dual flashers in the rear, as well. I'm guessing that's what the two lights flanking the center load light are. Note the fender-mounted electric spotlight with red flasher on one end.

Gresser F.H. (Orrville, OH)

1974 Landau Traditional endloader
1976 Classic combination

(SL photos)

When I took these pictures in 1993, Gresser's had recently exited the ambulance business and was trying to sell the combination. She was rusty and had an awful embossed gold cloth interior, so I politely passed.

I know it's the law in some places, but I can't imagine anything more undignified than a hearse with warning lights of any kind (or color) on it. I would just as soon buy an extra vehicle, with a light bar on it, for a lead car rather than demean my coach and its purpose in this manner.

In this part of the country, including the Oklahoma City metro, police and sheriff's departments escort processions, sometimes for a fee. In the Tulsa area, private motorcycle escort companies are used.

I'll get off of my soapbox now...for a while, anyway!

Across town in Orrville

This very nice 1970 Lifeliner was originally owned by the Orville F.D.

(SL photo)

The older prints were given to me by Alan Auble. The cars in these photos include a '68 ACC/Ford Amblewagon as well as '68 Superior, '70 M-M (two views), and '75 M-M combinations.

Auble's is still in the ambulance business.

Stacked-headlight Rescuers from NY - Part I

This is Myron Gittell's '65, seen here at the 1989 PCS meet in Gaithersburg.

(SL photo)

Rushford - 1965
Friendship - 1965
West Valley - 1966

The Friendship car already had significant cancer damage when the photo was taken...I sure like living where rust isn't an issue!

Stacked-headlight Rescuers from NY - Part II

Clymer - 1966
Evans Center - 1967
Mayville - 1968
Wrights Corners - 1968

(SL collection)

Evans Center - I've never cared for the S&M, sealed beam, or Solar Ray tunnel lights that were occasionally used on '57-'70 Superior hightops. I think the standard quad lights (four bullet lenses front and rear) "fit" those body styles much better.

Mayville - Note the unusual location of the low-band antenna, as opposed to most which were mounted on a front or (usually) rear fender.

Nothing classy about this one!

Chambers A.S. (Terre Haute, IN)
1972 Classic combination

This car was converted to a hightop by a funeral home in Ohio, then later sold to Chambers. C.A.S. was a non-emergency transfer service; this was their only car for at least 10 years.

those school bus light all around the top are big enough. 3 sirens on the top wounder what the current draw with all of them running would be. the flat face and the Conestoga roof lack some but still not a bad conversion. blanking out the left side glass they must have had cabinets in the car. it looke sliek they just cut the top at the drip rails mived it up and filled in the sides. simple but nice.

While on vacation in April of 1978, I moved some procars around (between
Oklahoma, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan) for Bob Hedges. He and I spent the better part of one day at Superior, where I took the attached (poor) photos.

Are these Brady's cars when he was in the ambulance business? And, is that 64 on the bottom left picture the old Welch Funeral Home combo unit? Refer to post #101.
