Back in the game...

As some may have noticed, the crosses on the window inserts on this car--and its twin--are backwards; that is, they lean rearward instead of forward. The cross and forward part of the streamers are supposed to be at the same angle as the aft edge of the window.

Using a rough-but-correct set I got from Carl as a pattern, a friend that has a sign/graphics shop was able to duplicate them nicely. The decals are even reverse images, just as on the originals:

Of all the 1971-79 era M-M and C-B cars I've seen over the years, only five have been like this; four combinations and one ambulance.

They look great. It is these little things that immediately jump to your eye when you own it. I know the feeling.
I wonder if the five you describe were either "Monday morning" or "Friday afternoon" productions?

I scanned and then modified a page from the '72 C-B brochure. I plan to have it made into a 12x16" (approximately) laminated display board to accompany the car:

That is a good idea Steve! How many times I have been showing a combination to someone and they seem to think it is homemade, they will ask something like, did you do the work yourself? I generally reply by saying, I wish I was that talented.

+1

It's time for paint...

I want to match the original white. I'm told that the paint is not in good enough condition to scan with 100% accuracy.

The C-B paint code is 5338L99L; however, on the twin car, the plate is stamped 99L5338L. I have no idea which one is correct. I assume that whomever stamped these got the characters mixed up on one of them. My body man couldn't find a current match for the first number; I just sent him the second one.

I suspect that the color is Cotillion white, as seen on many procars of this era. The numbers 5338--as seen on my car's data plate--are in the Dupont section of this list:

http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?color=Cotillion White

Can anyone here tell us what the other characters (L99L or 99L----L) mean on the C-B data plate?

Any help will be appreciated.

They are both correct. CB uses the dupont paint coad. 99 L would be black lower the 58 number is cthe white. You have one car that was white from the plant the other was black and white. Now CB could have done the repaint or the dealer or the home. But the paint coed reads black lower white top on one white on the other.

Your car was originally painted with lacquer paint, which is no longer available. The best that can be done is to do a complete repaint, if you don't want the repair to be evident. It can be repainted in base coat/clear coat or enamel. All of the major paint manufacturers have discontinued all the older paint formulas, and all we are left with are more modern paints with low VOC's. Many of the new cars are being painted with water based paints.

The nice thing is they are bringing back the centre brand. Got me a new gal of 99A with the Alaxia lable. Any of the single stage enamels rubbed out will resemble laquar. Stay away from base clear.there cheap shine just doesn't look right on a older car.

Paint progress

The paint work is finished, and the project is 99% complete. There is one spot to be touched up and one trim clip (on a fender skirt) that needs to be replaced.

Once we're at 100%, I'll re-assemble the car and take "after" photos:

Before and after

Much better!

I'm impressed by how the fiberglass (nose) repair turned out:
