You have to agree, looks much better

My air baffle that Ed picked up arrived today and what a beauty. Ed even painted it for me, thanks Ed. Anyways, you have to admit it certainly looks much better under the hood with it on.
:thankyou2:

Richard, what's the purpose of the baffle? Jim

Whats with the funky red paint on the horns? GM painted them satin black originally...

Paul,
The horns are red so he can find them in all that stuff under the hood.
Mike

I thought that they were red because they are embarrassed for the air horns that were removed uncermonously...

looks a lot better there then in the back seat out in the yard were I found it. don't forget the screw clamp that holds it to the air cleaner. and the strap that goes from the two plastic nuts down to the stud on the first manifold bolts. I don't want to see you lose it crossing the train tracks. thats the early 74 version only use on the first set in 74. the purpose is so you can't here it sucking air let along the gas the detuned 74 would use. :thumb: see were they moved the horns to. strange I just dropped then down under the suport on Roberts to clean up under the hood. that and i could throw away the splices MM put on for them.

It is clamped down to the air cleaner but don't see any other mounting brackets for underneath it. I'll take a closer look at it when I have it out next week.
That air baffle has a long tube going towards the air cleaner and then just before it gets there, it opens up into the large area. I cannot understand what it does but for me, at least it is back on and I know people will ask that infamous question, "What's that?" :confused2:

Forgot to point out to you that the horns should always point down, so condensation doesn't run to the inside and rust the vibrating diaphram.

two square plastic nuts pushed into the steel. I sent you the pictures of the bracket. that is curved and fits the baffle at that point with two hex headed screws . the bracket then goes down and attaches to the engine on the first manifold bolt. there is supposed to be a stud sticking out from that bolt that will let you put a nut on it. as I said I could not find that. the baffle was in the back set the shroud still on the car no bracket.
I moved Roberts horns for just that reason. MM did not care about how long they lasted. and I could not abide by the upside down look of them. even if it was not my car.

Guess what!!!

I drove the Criterion to the hotel today this being the first time with the air baffle on it. I noticed no difference in perfomance but one thing did stand out. The automatic choke seemed to release much earlier. Usually I get almost to the hotel before it idles down but today it was down at the first stop sign.
Air baffle may have something to do with it and then again, maybe not! :071:

Just remember...

It may look better but it is not period correct. When the car is judged, it will probably result in point deductons for authenticity. But if it makes you happy then we all are happy too.:puking:

I'm not into all that "period correct stuff" but, my Criterion is a 74 and this came off a 74 so it has to be right. At one time or another it had an air baffle on it.
You may be thinking about my post about putting the 2nd one I purchased on the Lifeliner. I undertand that would not be period correct but the Lifeliner would not pass judging according to PCS rules anyways.
You're right Brady, if you're happy with it then so be it!
Thanks

Your 74 is correct having the baffle setup. The 73 Caddy's didn't have this, at least my three 73's don't have it and don't look to have ever had that setup.

Here's the Criterion with the air baffle that arrived today. It still needs paint but I got it installed. Ed, this one did have the bracket which attaches to the exhaust manifold. I like this.

eBay one compared to the one Ed got for me and there sure is a difference in the two.

I thought you were still talking about the lifeliner.

Gotta stop using this mini-screen thingy. Blind in one eye and can't see outta the other.

so now look up the car and see when it was built. put the right one on it. the bracket will fit ether baffle. the apron is not correct with the one you have on it now. I one I found you is the early 74 so from 9/73 to12/73. the one you have now is from 1/74 to 6/74. so when was you car built? one way to tell is look at the other inner fender bracket if there are holes in it for the rubber then it had the early one on it if not then it had the late one . the horns look better black.
