John, to answer your question: according to Scripture, when Jesus returns, He will appear in the east, like the sun rising. So, when the dead in Christ arise, they will rise to face the east, hence burying with the head to the west and the feet to the east. Now, not all cemeteries do this. I have been to plenty of cemeteries where they lay out the graves to make to most of the space available so you could be head to feet in any direction. But for church or Christian cemeteries, they are plotted with the graves east to west.

east to west

'm just thinking of the little graveyard my grandfather dug many a hole in by hand,is laid out that way with all the graves facing east. His is the closest to the gate so he can get out first.....guess that was one of the perks of the job.

In my small town cemetery, there are several graves that face south. (99% face east) I was always told these were suicides. Doesn't seem like they do this anymore.

Was this common practice "years ago?"

I was once told that people that commit suicide were not allowed to be buried in a Catholic Cemetery.. Another person told me that people that committed suicide were buried face down in the 1800's. Lots of strange customs back then that we don't know about or understand today..

The one exception to that are of course ministers, who ought to be buried facing West so that they are facing their congregations. And yes, this exception, I'm sure, is still duly noted at the mortuary colleges.

Not true anymore. Hell, if the Catholic's will let you cremate the body and take cremated remains to the church for a mass, then anything goes nowadays!
