what the? 77 Cadillac

A friend sent this picture today. When he tried to explain and odd looking Fleetwood all I could think of was a coach that had been cut down. This thing seems to have had more body at one time. And a full trunk at the back. Any ideas? I will be making a road trip on Monday. This is on a car lot not far from home. It is priced at $1500. More info will follow when I talk to a salesman on Monday. It will be interesting to see what kind of story they have for this one.

looks like 75 or 76

Daniel,
I think Larry said it has 76 on the window. We are wondering about the rear deck. From the rear window to just behind the wheel well openings the flat area is covered with vinyl. Larry says this part of the rear deck is also hinged. I will be there in the morning. I will be posting what I get from the seller and what the car tells me.

Possibly some sort of parade vehicle, or homebuilt flower car?
If its in as good condition as it looks I would get it and figure out what it is later.

more on the mystery 76 Fleetwood

Today I went to see this beast for myself. This is on an idependent car lot not far from home. So even though the door sign says they open at 10am there was no one there at 11am. I did get more pictures. From the side I can detect no 3rd door area where this would be a cut down 6 door limo. The long flat deck is covered in some in need of TLC vinyl. The overall workmanship seems to be pretty good. Where they dropped the ball was using garden gate hinges and kitchen drawer pulls on the trap door on the deck. this part tells me it is a home spun creation. The rear of the long deck has a full size normal trunk lid. Excellent tires all around. The gray interior tells me the steering column has been changed. The column is red. The car was still locked so I do not know the mileage. There is some rust bubbles at the top of the left fender, right on the very front of the fender. The rubber fillers at the rear bumper need replaced. I think these are being made yet. Like John R says, I am thinking it may be worth getting just for the novelty of it. The asking price is $1500. More pictures to follow. I am going back on Tuesday to see if the lot is open. It will be interesting to hear what they know or think they know about this car. Any and all your comments are welcome.

mystery Fleetwood pics

Here are a few more pictures of the Mystery Fleetwood. I did notice musical notes applied to the rear of the sail panel at either side of the rear window. That hints of band car. But I still wonder about the usefulness of that trap door in the rear deck. Doesn't look like it utilizes the space availible very well.

The mystery is getting stranger. i thought the covering was removable, and there was a seat or well, now I clearly see its not. The small door dont make any sence either. For the price if it runs it would make at least a great parts car, but this may really be something special if you can figure why it was built. And yes, the filler panels are still being reproduced, so no problem there.

just a little more work and one could have a 4 door cady pick up with some class. no don't think about it to may projects now

all your advice

The mystery 76 is still a mystery. We will be making a trip back to look at this beast on Tuesday. I have been doing a bit of book work. The thought of a 'classy' pick up did come to us too. It has already been cut once. With a tape measure in hand we will also get some measurements to match with the factory specs. Maybe we will be able to at least figure out what this started life as in 1976.

more mystery car

The seller was there today. The tag hanging from the mirror says 76. The Ohio title says 1975. The Vin is 6F23S5Q143053 This car was a 6 door sedan. the rear do.ors have been sealed since the body was cut to make the long rear deck. The old bluegrass player was also the bodyman. See the pictures of the 'new' well for the spare tire. The well cover locks with a set screw on each of the rear corners. It is unlocked by turning the knobs inside the trunk. I can find no builders label or logo other than Cadillac and Fleetwood. Being a 6 door car there should be some other label I would think. It could have been painted over.
I was told the top end has been done recently. I don't know what they are calling recently. It sounded good and started easily for a car that had not been running for a couple weeks. No smoke. It has a 500 cubic inch engine with a auto trans. The climate control A/C does not work. After market radio. Engine bay was cleaner than I expected. Not show car clean but clean. Now we know.

makes sense now. did they just move the rear roof line up for the back glass?
take a lot more work to make a pickup out of it. but if it was something like a Collins all they had was a small glue one fender tag.

No mystery here...she's a factory four-door Fleetwood 75 sedan (no divider) or limousine (with divider). She's either a '76 with a '75 grille, or a '75 with '76 parking/cornering lamps.

the body number is for a 4 sedan. which is what they would make the 6 door limo out of. this man welded the rear doors shut mover the rear window up to the center doors and made a well were the back seat would be.I'm guessing to put his drums in .

As others have said, no mystery with this one... Just a hacked up Fleetwood 75 Sedan/Limo, it was never a 6-door. The rear section of the top was removed aft of the C pillar and now the spare tire resides where the rear seat was originally... Not sure what they were trying to achieve with this modification, but it's far from classy! Run a mile
