Seldom Seen

I do understand that the class awards are now supplied by the national club. Where the awards come from wasn't my question. My question involves the money the chapter needs to pony up to pay for the awards that are used. How can I plan for this expense when I don't know what the expense will be?

Well, I didn't mean to start a judging debate just because one numbnut marked off points because I secured my ambulance grills with suction cups. I never have won anything in judging, don't care either. :beatdeadhorse5: The ones that do win are definitely deserving.

As someone who has never been interested in judging or taking home a trophy, I feel I can genuinely give an unbiased opinion on the matter. If our current (new) judging system is the stupidest thing some people have ever seen, well then we have plenty of stupid company. Right off the top of my head, I can think of the Cadillac LaSalle Club, the Oldsmobile Club of America, and even the Antique Automobile Club of America as having the same judging system.

I don't think that the argument of someone no longer has any incentive to better their car holds water. I think that argument overlooks what seems to be a basic human desire to always be better. "My car scored a 92. If I do these things I got deducted for, maybe I can get closer to 100". And that feeling of personal betterment doesn't even take into consideration that there is still the Best of Show award above all the class awards.

When we were in Milwaukee for the 2013 International Meet, and the motorcycle hearse was unveiled, I had one of our long term members come up to me and jokingly commented, "I hope he's not going to have that judged. We don't have a class for it". Not having a class for something out of the ordinary showing up is no longer a concern.

Now as a former meet host, one question that I do have about the current judging system that I have yet to receive a satisfactory answer to, is how does a meet host plan for trophy expenses when the number of trophies that will be given out is unknown in advance? Milwaukee was the last meet held under the old judging system. I knew I had to supply 30 class awards (first, second, and third place in 10 different classes). If I were to hold a meet now, I have no idea how many awards I'm going to need, so how can I budget for them?

I know what you mean, and Im always out to improve my cars but I was just making a point. It dosent matter if you get the lowest point or the highest point in that spread everyone still gets an award. Whats wrong with a little competition and only awarding it to the highest placing point number in that spread? If 50 people get a 2nd place award it feels pretty worthless (like a participation trophy just for showing up would), there is some worth making the cut because you put the effort and time in making your car the best. I know other clubs do it too, and I don't understand it either, no reason we had to be like everyone else. People are so afraid of someone getting offended that rules get changed so no one will leave with hurt feelings.
I also agree, how are you supposed to even know how many trophies to get now? In the case of MN, I think just about everyone that was judged won (again to me its like an award just for showing up with a nice coach).
Im by far a trophy hunter, I could care less if I get one or not, I just do not understand the reasoning behind the way its done, other than not to make someone cry because they didn't score the points someone else did.
As for the motorcycle hearse, no worries about it being judged anyway, it has to be 10 years old to be judged last I knew.
It really doesn't matter anyway I guess, as I most likely will not attend a meet for a long time, or ever get a car judged under the new rules. It was bad enough that in MN I was told if I had it judged it would probably win an award. Point proven right there. No way should that POS I brought win anything in its condition.
just my opinions, Im sure like usual Im the only one that thinks this way, so it makes no difference.

it is my understanding that once you receive award you don't get another unless you advance into the next . say from third to second. I have no Ida how we handle a new owner of the car. but I will say I agree with John on the fact that we need to tighten up our judging. we have been rather loose on it knowing that the cream will still rise to the top. right now we have advance cars in places they most likely can't stay in if we tighten up our judging to were it should be.
