So I had to teach a class to nursing students today on EMS response and the history of Emergency Medical Services. To illustrate the versatility of the combination I put one of the Poncho's panels on, I thought I would share because I never use these things...................I am an ambulance guy.
To tell you the truth, I really don't like these particular panels because I do not think they are properly fitted. They cover part of the tiara and look like somebody stuck some panels on there. But they are what I got from Cox Funeral Home when I bought the car with the briefcase full o' cash in Kingsport.

I would agree with you. I LOVE your coach, but those panels look like crap on it. Leave them off. I haven't seen too many combinations that look very good with the panels on.

The funeral home in my home town(Blue Earth, MN) ran a '70 M-M combination until around 1990. The coach was never used for ambulance service and I never saw it with the panels off. I always thought that it would have looked so much better with them off.

Did the Pontiac come from the Cox funeral home in Barberton?

No Kentucky. I bought it during the 2006 International in Kingsport and drove it home.

The problem is the panels cover too much. They are hiding a lot of beautiful chrome.

I dislike them on as well.

Any chance they can be modified or cut the rear edge off ?

If not, I would say leave them off.

No need for them on a ambulance anyway,
Darren

Well they are original equipment. I would not want to modify them for fear some knuckleheaded judge might count off like they did the suction cup grills that one time.

Or.... just don't enter your car to be judged! I never understood the concept of needing to compare apples to oranges anyway!

Panels or no panels, it's a great car, I was luck enough to drive it, even if I did lose the breaks for a bit! It rides great and looks sharp.

with our new judging system the car only com peats with it's self so it's not comparing apples and oranges. it's your apple with your apple and his orange with his orange.

one could have a set made up if they wished to modify them but they are only original once. that of course is our goal to keep it original. so if your stuck with a 59 your stuck with those fins.

I'd be looking to add some chrome to the panels. Either some tape or something temporary just to see if this would work.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still going to look like a pig. The panels should be relegated to the back of the garage, and should only come out when the car transfers ownership.

I can still remember clearly that moment in time, when you had that look of fear in your eyes, and you were so pale, that I thought that we should call you "Casper the ghost"... LOL... You handled the problem well, and didn't crash the car, and that is the best outcome of a bad situation. It should remain a lesson for all that own old cars, that brakes can and will fail, if you don't maintain them properly. This means flushing the brake fluid every two or three years, and checking all components for leaks. Catastrophic brake failures are a direct result of neglect of the vehicle braking system.

And the new system is the stupidest thing Ive ever seen. No more reason to improve your coach anymore, as long as you fit in a certain point spread you get a trophy, even if someone scores higher. Makes as much sense as kids in school that get a award for showing up. New system is the reason I will NEVER have another car judged.

I'll leave this argument for were it might do some good.

As someone who has never been interested in judging or taking home a trophy, I feel I can genuinely give an unbiased opinion on the matter. If our current (new) judging system is the stupidest thing some people have ever seen, well then we have plenty of stupid company. Right off the top of my head, I can think of the Cadillac LaSalle Club, the Oldsmobile Club of America, and even the Antique Automobile Club of America as having the same judging system.

I don't think that the argument of someone no longer has any incentive to better their car holds water. I think that argument overlooks what seems to be a basic human desire to always be better. "My car scored a 92. If I do these things I got deducted for, maybe I can get closer to 100". And that feeling of personal betterment doesn't even take into consideration that there is still the Best of Show award above all the class awards.

When we were in Milwaukee for the 2013 International Meet, and the motorcycle hearse was unveiled, I had one of our long term members come up to me and jokingly commented, "I hope he's not going to have that judged. We don't have a class for it". Not having a class for something out of the ordinary showing up is no longer a concern.

Now as a former meet host, one question that I do have about the current judging system that I have yet to receive a satisfactory answer to, is how does a meet host plan for trophy expenses when the number of trophies that will be given out is unknown in advance? Milwaukee was the last meet held under the old judging system. I knew I had to supply 30 class awards (first, second, and third place in 10 different classes). If I were to hold a meet now, I have no idea how many awards I'm going to need, so how can I budget for them?

It isn't a problem, since the awards are the responsibility of the club, not the chapter. The only thing that the chapter has to do is to reimburse the club for the awards.... which may or may not have been done for the last 2 meets, but that was what was agreed on at the Board of Directors meet, when we changed the judging policy, during my term as President. Don't know how it is being handled by the current administration.
