I received the below question about the "scales of Justice" icon located in the top right hand corner of each thread. I am going to answer this to the general membership, so all will know how this system works. It is a separate and independent ranking system. Please feel free to use this to show your pleasure or displeasure with the author of a post. This is an anonymous system and only you know what you have given. There is a place to give comments, but I still haven't found where you can read these comments. Leaving a comment is not a requirement. The "Thank You" at the bottom of the page is not connected to this ranking system in any way.

"xxxx is an unknown quantity at this point"

What does that mean?

What does it mean when someone is listed as being on a "distinguished road?"

Thanks,
xxxx

It refers to the "User Reputation system" and it is built into the software. Everyone starts off on a distinguished road, with reputation point level of 10 points and they can either move forward or backward in the reputation point system. This is all determined by the members of the forums. There are built in safeguards to keep any one person from being picked on. You will need to spread your reputation points around to at least 10 others before you can give a negative or positive point to the same person in another post. If you click on the "scale" in one of your posts, you can see your total points, however, points are given and taken away anonymously.
The terms that apply are posted below....

User is not well liked = has greater than 35 negative points
User can only hope to improve = 25 negative points
User has a little shameless behavior in the past = 10 negative points
User is an unknown quantity at this point = has 0 points
User is on a distinguished road = 10 positive points .... this is where everyone starts on day one of forum membership
User will become famous soon enough = 50 positive points
User has a spectacular aura about = 100 positive points
User is a jewel in the rough = 200 positive points
User is just really nice = 350 positive points
User is a glorious beacon of light = 450 positive points
User is a name known to all = 550 positive points
User is a splendid one to behold = 650 positive points
User has much to be proud of = 1000 positive points
User has a brilliant future = 1500 positive points
User has a reputation beyond repute = 2000 points

There used to be a selection in the admin panel of vBulletin to active a system to allow individual users to modify their reputation system. I believe this was removed, and a download was available. However, when Proboards became more admin friendly, I dropped the VB account and switch. But this is the best advice I could offer. Except under the user rep, the user could see who made the comment, positive or negative, and what they wrote. Which was always setting a stage for "civil war". I had it disabled.

Oh.. It would have been in the Privacy Settings.

Thanks for the information, and I am aware of how this system can cause a war if people knew who gave them negative feedback since I have experienced it today with one member giving me a negative. A few have PM'd me asking why this was added. I would like to point out that this is a standard feature of the software, and is installed on every version of the software for many years. The only thing that has changed in later versions is that some of the initial features were disabled because of problems with the users. I attempt to answer the questions about how various functions of the software work, and when I don't know, as happened earlier today when I received the email, I attempt to learn as much about it as possible. It took quite a few hours reading and searching to find the answers. I hope that this makes your membership on the website a more pleasant experiance...
thanks Paul

If you haven't figured it out already, the comments that go with rep SHOULD be visible if you click the "User CP" button at the top left of most pages. At least that is how it works on other VB boards I am on. I left you a rep comment if you'd like to try it.

I was aware of that feature, since I found it in my research. I just don't know who left the comment and negative, but I do have some idea. The other unique thing about this feature, it allows some to give a greater number of points at one time, depending on their post count, and time on the message forums. I just haven't bothered to look up what that number is, since it isn't that important to me to know who the miscreant is. If they so choose not to like a function of the forum software, and blame me for explaining it to the membership, then they have a bigger problem in life than just this reputation system. Their comment was.....

Too controlling As someone else just said to me... "You can't please everyone.. And it's best not to try.", however, it is my privilege to make sure that these forums run smoothly, and that the members of these forum have a pleasant experience. To the end of my time as webmaster, I will continue to try to maintain and keep this high standard that these forums have so proudly become in the past 2 years.

I believe people with more positive rep also give out more points when they rep someone than those with less rep. People with negative rep can't "demote" people with positive rep.

i don't have time to praise or slug. I don't tweet or tex ether. but for those that like to amuse them-self go for it.

I am with Ed, I have too much to do to praise or slug. I don't facebook, tweet, twitter or sheet. I did call out the website overseer committee today but that was just giving them my opinion in a pm and only for the good of the order.:3_7_11v:

Well, Im sure this is another avenue for my fan club to express their opinions of me! But ya know what? I dont give a darn what people think! As long as the moderators dont see any problems with me & my posts, Im not worried. I also dont Facebook,My Space, Twitter or Tweet or Text!

Well at least it was a positive comment. That's my motto, as an EMS Leader. "You can't please everyone, and it's best not to try. Take life with a grain of salt, tongue in cheek, but don't bite it off".
