New Bling for the Queen

I took advantage of the beautiful weather today and gave the Queen a few new jewels. I replaced the original red Federal 17D with a Federal 176D w/ red, clear, & blue bulbs under a spotless clear dome along with new gaskets. I also mounted the new red Unity grille lights and yep, they alternate. We fixed the horn, greased the undercarriage and gave her a little exercise today under a beautiful gulf coast sky.

A special thanks to JD and Doug for working with me on aquiring the lights. Now I'm going to go sand down an old backboard and put part of an EMS patch collection on it for display. Hope everyone has a great weekend! :thumb:

Your 64 Olds looks beautiful with the correct period beacon ray and nice front grill lights. Do not add any more lights or it will ruin it. Some guys think more is better-being a person that was in the business I so appreciate what is period correct and know also when it is over kill-your car is perfect. Thank you. I knew it wouldn't be long before someone threw the caution flag on me about lights :stop:

Since this car is a beautiful Combination what you see is all there will be. I tried to add only what I thought I would have optioned had I been ordering the car "back in the day". I agree with you that it looks very good just the way it is, thanks.

Now if she were a straight ambulance, that might just be a whole different story. :D
 
just noticed are the mirrors aftermarket or the gm deluxe pick up ones. CB was big on using a cheap mirror on the right. they would get the standard gm on on the left door and add a different aftermarket on on the right. Drove me crazy on the ambulance when I first got it. so I looked all over for the correct GM one. some how now it dosent bother me on the Seville

The one that was on the car when he bought it came with it new; you can't get much more period correct than that!

:beatdeadhorse5: Steve is right. I took a minor liberty in changing out the Federal light. However it is still of the correct period, still looks good and is just a little bit more personalized for her current owner. I'm sure that one day a future owner will change things up to better suit their own tastes as well. The multi-colored bulbs under a clear dome are more of a regional thing for me. That was more prevalent around here, thanks to the Houston Police Department, than a single color model 17 was. The unity lights are correct, in my humble opinion, as well.

Now if I were to add four more model 176's and a fat Q to the roof I think we would all agree that is overboard, especially for a combination. But, as I stated before, this is all she gets because I like what I see now.

ED, as far as the mirrors go, I think what is on there is original to the car but they are in really good shape so there is a chance that a previous owner changed them out. I'm just not that smart on mirrors.

Now I'm only looking for a set of period correct (one color, period correct) stretcher straps and I think I'll be getting close to being able to stop for a little while. :cheers:
 
she looks good. but I'm sure the mirriors are 67 to 72 Gm pickup the olds would have had small round ones tucked tight to the glass. what color belts you looking for. the gray ones with a clam shell buckle?
 
Did you use the original Model 17 skirt for this light and put an old style "small" dome on it? It appears you did, I didn't think the 176 guts would clear the small dome.. Looks hot though.
 
I used the skirt and demountable hardware from the model 17. The 176 including bulbs and dome came from John Dorgan as a complete unit. I only used the existing 17 skirt since I didn't take the skirt trimming class and my hands shake sometimes which makes me a little nervous.
 
Noticed that you said ya have a blue bulb on that 176 Bruce? Around here unless your in law enforcement that is a big NO NO and it reminded me of ambulance story my boss told me once! Back in the 1970's we had a 1970 M-M classic duplex here that had a 173-D Beacon Ray with a red bulb a clear bulb and a blue bulb in it with a clear dome. On a run my boss had to the local hospital he had a highway patrolman pretty much chew him out in the old ER and inform him since he was not a law enforcement officer that he was not to have that blue bulb in his ambulance beacon!:3_7_11v: Needless to say he had that bulb removed and replaced pretty quickly when he got back in off that call! And I think he said they went all red with the bulbs at that time on that M-M.
 
The State of Texas only requires red lights for emergency vehicles. All other colors are optional as additions to the required red. Texas current law states that emergency vehicles must be equipped with red alternating or flashing lights mounted as high and wide on the vehicle as practical and must be visible during daylight hours from a distance of 500 feet, front and rear. This law does not apply to law enforcement vehicles who are not required by State law to display lights at all. They are only required to have a siren. (That's a stupid exemption. I don't know any law enforcement agency who runs that way around here.)

Our current EMS units all have the required reds mounted as above but we also utilize blue and clear to the front and amber to the rear. As a footnote, all of our EMS units are also equipped with Timberwolf mechanical sirens. www.timberwolfsirens.com
 
The question of light color varies from state to state. Here in MD, blue is only for law enforcement (usually blue/red or all blue). In Virginia, state troppers are all blue, and many local agencies do likewise. But in Pennsylvania, all blue is for volunteer firefighters' personal vehicles, and police is blue/red. In DC, the police use red/white/blue while all blue is for parking enforcement. And when I lived in Oklahoma, all blue was....for the highway department. :stars:
