Let the chaos begin....

I took advantage of the warm weather today and being off of work and started to tear my car apart. The radio and the clock need fixed, so I decided to take them out first. Thank goodness for shop manuals! Here are a few pics of the destruction, er, progress.....

Got a cousin that re-works clocks and radios for vintage cars. I've got his info listed in the Recomended Vendors forum as Clock and Radio Conversions. Might wanna give him a try!

radio swap

Shawn dose your rear radio controls work? I cant get my am radio to work with the rear controls you can turn it on and hear static but the rear control has no control over the radio. I finally removed the am radio and instlled a am fm from anther car and that worked great but the rear control still dose not work, I reinstall the am radio into the hearse where it still dont work so I thing I can write off that radio, I had the am fm installed in the hearse and moved it into limo. I installed a new am fm cd i pod radio in the trunk and installed speakers under the seats. My kids don't care for radio they only want to hear their i pods in the speakers I would love to find a am that radio and get the rear controls working agion. USA parts have radios that will fit into the car with cassets or cd

Wood trim

Their was a guy a few years ago that sold the dash wood trim for the 68s I wish I had bought two of them any Idea where you can get on I see you trim is faded also

Good luck Shawn, you're a much braver man than I. :3_7_11v:

Thanks. I don't mind tearing things apart if I have book to tell/show me how. I have MANY more things to rip into over the winter. All of my window motors are weak and need attention, the driver's side vent window does not work at all and most of my glass run channels need replaced. All the doors need new weatherstripping, as does the trunk. Then, come spring, hopefully it's off to the upholstery man for new seat material, headliner and carpet. After that, there are some minor motor issues that I need to have looked at (I too think I have a stuck lifter or two, I know you can relate to that). So, as with any project, this is just the beginning

at least you can get to yours from the top. the days of laying on your back with your feet dangling over the seat back were hard on a kid. I don't even want to thing of it now. glad nothing I have has a radio. wish they had not cut up the blank in the 72 to try to put one in. that is going to be hard to find.

thanks shawn

I have spent the last few years like you working on the cars in the winter I just need to replace these dash parts and a drivers door panal, my window was left down in the rain before i bought it and I need the seat in the hearse redone the velvet is dry and brittle It is a great feeling to finaly have the cars done enough not to completly tearing them apart each year

I looked up the listing you referred to and gave your cousin a call. I left a message over a week ago and haven't heard back from him. I hope he contacts me soon, I really want to get these things mailed out so I am not in a rush in a few months.

I don't know if my rear controls work, as the radio that was in the car was an AM/FM unit. It is my understanding, like you said, that they only work on an AM radio. I guess that was the large, round cable I found when I took the dash apart that was hanging there near the radio with an end on it about the size of a quarter with what looked like 10 pins sticking out of it--I am assuming it is the rear radio control cable? It sure didn't look like it plugged into anything else that was around, so that's what I thought it was. Do all the AM radios have a place for that to plug into, or do you have to have a special one made just for the 75 series cars? Just curious.

I have seen the units on USA Parts. I thought about them for a while, but decided to keep it original for now. Thanks for the info though.

Give me a couple days and let me see what I can find out for ya!

Thanks

Thanks Jeremy. I would appreciate it. Not trying to make you do any extra work or be a go-between, just occured to me that he may be out of town due to the holidays.

Not a problem! They do mission work this time of year and have a son that lives out of state. But I'll see if I can find out something for you over the weekend!

Here are the best quality ones I have found so far, haven't ordered one yet, but think I will. Mine is more than faded, the wood is almost completely gone (you can see just a bit of it near the radio control holes).

Shawn (and Michael Lee),

If you are looking for replacement wood trim for your dash and would like to keep the car's original appearance, I would be hesitant to use what is shown in that eBay auction. The original wood trim on the 1968 is concacve from the viewpoint of the driver and what captcadillac is selling is convex.

I think that the am is differant

I have saved raidos and need to check I have amps from behind the glove box that came off some parts cars I found one fm radio that worked and instaalled it in the dash of the hearse with one speaker for a few years till I got the limo going then I installed it into the limo and I do belive that big wire is for the am radio going back to the rear control. not having stereo speakers factory installed the the family likes the ipod better
