I found the missing ambulance

I have heard the stories of an “old” ambulance in the area and thus have been looking for it for several years now. Well the other night I was at the Upstate’s meeting at Guptill’s (a cruise night with like 1500 cars) and this guy comes up to me and starts to tell me about an ambulance that he has. It did not take long for me to find out two things. One this is the ambulance that I have been trying to track down and two he knows very little about it. He thinks he has a gold mine:rolleyes:, "it has some surface rust but other than that it is in good shape." He thought that it might be a Superior with a fiberglass roof. Most everything is in tact. We made arrangements for me to see it. Attached (will as soon as Paul attaches them) are the pictures that I took of it. By the way the pictures do not do it justice, they make it look actually better than it is! What a same, this 1974 SS was at one time a great car, now it’s a rusted wreck! He said that he will be putting it on e-bay shortly. If he doesn’t get what he thinks its worth he will then be parting it out.

You're kidding....

Really, you're kidding. Guy would be lucky for someone to not charge him to take it off his hands. I shouldn't be so critical because I do not know all the particulars but to me it looks rough.

To me, it looks like an Ed Renstrom 12 month project car. While the damage to the rear left is problematic, it isn't beyond repair. This could be a stunning car if someone were inclined to spend the money to do the restoration. I would want to see what it looks like from the underneath before I committed any money toward a project like this. If the undercarriage is sound, and the floors are intact, then the outside sheet metal wouldn't be that difficult of a repair for the experienced body man. A lot hinges on the parts of the car that you can't see, and the financial commitment of the owner. Given the costs involved, this car would have to have a low initial purchase price to make it attractive enough for one to move forward with the project.

Its the photo!

"The headliner and cabinetry in the patient compartment look ok."
Unfortunately that is not the case. The headliner is discolored and it is not just dirty. There are things growing there!

one would have to be in love with a S&S and get it cheap enough. really all depends on the rest of the car. but sadly when the body it in this shape the rest is the same of worse. if the man wants to sell it the least he could do is air up the tires. no then if you could get it at the right price with a donor car. then it's do able. what what I can see all the S&S stuff is there that is what you can't find. the interior is there so you have a pattern. sadly enough this is what your finding as ambulances. been a long time since 79

Ed...... I believe that it is a 1973. I am thinking of buying it and sending it out to you for a total makeover, just to prove to all these other doubters that it can be restored and that you are the man to restore it. :D

Exterior Compartments?

In the first two pictures, we can see what looks like compartment doors on the “D Post” just in front of the back door. What were those for?
