Gatlinburg Ectos

2gbs.jpg

A friend of mine is running around Gatlinburg on vacation with his kids and sent me this pic. They were in some kind of cars of stars type place. Not sure where this pair falls in the history of Ecto's, whether they are the rebuilt movie cars or other clones, but I thought I'd share the picture.

Clearly a clone, as there are a couple of "detail" differences between it and the movie cars.

Fortunately, there aren't a pair of them there, only one. That's a mirror in the background. :)|:)

LMAO !!!:14_6_12::hide:

This one is of course in a Gatlinburg, TN museum that "claims" to have actual star and movie cars but its nothing more than a tourist trap which the Parkway in both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are lined with many! Although the cars displayed are pretty cool to look at even it their not the "actual" cars they say they are! I know the Ecto clone has been there since the late 1990's as I've seen it a couple times my self. All if not most of the cars have a Barris Customs emblem on them as well.

Wow, can't believe I didn't catch the mirror thing! If they say Barris on them it is probably the one that traveled around on the Autorama circuit back in the day, along with K.I.T.T. (also there), the General Lee and various other movie cars. That whole thing was a Barris promotion I think.

At least it's a M&M, not the horrible desecration of the Miller / Brintlinger / Barb '59 Eureka combination done by the fine folks at Volo.

I was just going to mention that. Im not for cloning ectos but at least if you do it make sure it is the correct coachbuilder, and do it right. This one seems alot closer than some I have seen.
the one at Volo is signed on the hood by Barris, correct me if Im wrong, but I dont think he had anything to do with building the ecto.

Barris will sign anything if you pay him enough.

no courtesy

I wrote to the Volo when their 'clone' appeared in a magazine. I questioned why a museum (a place that should know these things) would make a clone and not even use the correct base car. They did not have the courtesy to reply. Like the custom builder guy named in an earlier post they are just there for the money. The general public does not have a clue that the Eureka is not the real McCoy as the saying goes.
My opinion is there are enough GB clones out there. But when it is your car, coach, truck or whatever it is yours to do with as you please.

Here is my experiance with Volo. So I dont have to write it again I pasted from another thread on the subject:

I fought with the manager of the Volo Museum for about a half hour about the car being fake. My girlfriend thought I was going to jail. They play a movie snip on a tv screen by the car and I told him to look at it, I even showed him a model they had on the shelf for sale and the growing crowd even agreed that this car didn't even have the correct shape. I tried to get my money back, I argued that I drove 6 hours to see this car, and to find out its a fake was BS. He never even gave me my admission price back. He told me he would look into it (yeah right).
I have also wondered how many other cars were real, I think they are ALL fakes. The Scooby Doo Mystery Machine is not even close to the movie one either (or the cartoon)

The Ecto was sold to Barris by it's builder Peter Mosen in 1995. He used it for promo work for Sony between the two films. He got alot of access to the screen used car back in the 80's and recently released alot of his old pics of it and some of the events he attended with his.

There's tons of stories of the museum saying it's the real one, I'm sure because of the Barris link.

Here's a pic of his info sign he used to display with the car. As a kid I had the Real Ghostbusters magazine with him in it.

When the real Ecto drives by the New York public library, the stone lions are going to get off the pedestals and roar...
