Frost on the Criterion this morning

I have to drive the Criterion for a couple days since Terri's Porsche needs a water pump. Criterion was covered in frost and the heat is currently not working-oh joy! :horsepoop-1:

They have frost in Florida? All of my illusions have been shattered!!!

The heater/climate control in my Criterion isn't working, and I haven't had a chance to look at it since I got it. Not a really big deal since it is parked at the moment. Mind you, my brother made the 7 hour drive in it from New York City to Niagara Falls at the end of November without the heater....and was a bit grumpy about it. Fortunately, I was able to console him with a bottle of Jack Daniels! :thumb:

Are you aware of any recurring issues with heaters/climate controls in these Caddies that might be a good place for me to start investigating?

Both the Criterion and Lifeliner have heat and A/C issues. The Lifeliner needs a new climate controller so I've been told and have not had time to check the Criterion as yet.

frost on...

Richard,
We feel your pain. But not much. I had to take the left front spindle off Shelley's PT Cruiser and it was only 12 degress on the car port. But it was a dry cold.

you fix the heater in July and the AC in December. I still get confused by people that worry more about lights then having things work on the car.:poster_oops: fix the car then paint and swap lights. I would rather drive a ugly car in comfort, safely then a nice car that most of the every day things don't work on. one you can't stop and you only drive by herding it. guess I have been a poor boy to long to enjoy being miserable to look good. I remember when all I could afford for a second car for me was a 50 jeep. no I don't want it back!!!

Wawaa to those of you in the frozen tundra...80 degrees on my back porch as I type. :yum:

Watching the Chihuahuas run around and wishing my TPC had arrived today instead of Bills. :blahblah

my heat works

Richard I got the heat working in my limo going with a new togal switch mounted under the dash to the fan motor. I got a fan pig tail conector off a onther car so I would not mess up my wiring harness splicing in the new wire.
this got my fan running and then routed vacum to open the heat door.this gives me hot only but it is heat. Now that I am redoing the car agion I hope to have gotten enough parts over the year to put it all together this winter so that I can get the a/c working agion. dont forget a inline fuse for the togal switch

Dang Richard, it was 16 here this morning and I had visions about coming to see you to warm up but guess that is out. Went to south Ga. today to get a truck we bought and it was only about 2 degrees warmer than home.:poster_oops:

we made it up to 18 today with freezing fog. every tree is the nicest flocked christmas tree you have ever seen. but I spend a week in Savanna Ga when it got down to 19 there, nasty cold. I have 4 cars sitting out side right now the heater workes in all of them front and rear the AC in 3. we will get that 73 down and get it redone as soon as I heal up from last month.

Today we are getting a high of 50 degrees and my mechanic is working on Terri's car. Can you believe this, he has to remove the interior of the car including the passenger seat in order to access the engine and water pump. There is a belly pan under the car that needs to be removed too. You have to work on the pump from the top and under the car. Crazy. Water pump is on the lower left side. I've heard it is almost easier to remove the engine than to work on it while in the car.

A dealership salesman once told me that you don't want to be the owner of an Audi once they are out of warranty. I guess that must also go for some of the other exotic brands of cars that you have to go to school for a year just to know what goes where and in what order. The same repair on a Commercial Chassis rear drive Cadillac would probably take just a few hours to complete. When she gets the bill, you will need the Criterion to transport her home.........

I know what you mean. She had the alternator rebuilt a couple months ago and Joe (my guy) did it for $600. The dealer wanted $1200 for the alternator and another $450 to replace it. Car is out of warranty so the time to trade may be fast approaching.
Now for something really nuts. If Terri has a flat it requires a flat bed tow truck because even if you were to change the tire, there is no place to put the flat anywhere in/on the car. Both trunks are too small to hold it so it would have to be strapped to the hood. Now that is a nice picture. You cannot rotate the tires either since they only roll in one direction and the back tires are larger than the fronts.

The make and brand is not the issue when it comes to dificult repairs.

I owned a full size 1991 Ford E150 cargo van for a long time and the alternator went on me twice over the many years that I owned it. With the very small hood on the van and the mount for the alternator, you could not pull the alternator from the top. Easiest way was to remove the grill, drain and remove the radiator and pull the alternator straight out the front. It took me a long time to change it the first time. Even with the radiator removal, the second time only took a couple of minutes.

As for cold weather repairs... I was out in the driveway last February on what was probably our coldest day of the year replacing the heater core in my Grand Am. It couldn't have started leaking in July or August... it just completely let go one day on the way home from work in the dead of winter.

Hope the repair goes well for you Richard.

rememberj when

I was just wondering, when did they start putting water pumps on Porches? I thought they were doing it right when they were air cooled. Of course I still have air cooled VWs too.
A friend worked for a Mercedes dealer in Richard land. Keith said the reason you saw so many of the little Mercedes sport cars on the lot was because they got traded when the warranty was up. $1200 to change the filters under the cowl vent below the windshield. These were to keep dust and whatever from getting into the passenger compartment. I guess you are suppose to roll down the windows either in that case.
I think I would rather spend my $$ on an old car than a new one. At least the old ones I can do most of the work.

I hear ya. Heading to Orlando this morning to get a thermostat for her car. Might as well change it to be on the safe side. Anyways, what's another $76 for a thermostat.

plus the trip. but then I never liked any of the ones you had to crawl into and then turn around twice like a dog to get settled in and drive. then to get out you throw the door open and drag yourself out clawing at the gravel with you hands. just is not fun. no reason they could not have designed the car so that you pulled 4 pins. the engine, drive train and rear suspension dropped out. you replaced anything you needed to and put it back in. they spent more money designing access panels and testing to see if it could be done then figuring out how to do it easy. all that to justify the big bucks spend on necessary repairs. but then there are a certain level of people that just want to brag how much things cost them. these kind of cars are engineered to them. :my2cents:

And, on a scale of 1 to 10, the chances of getting Terri to sell her Porsche and get another Pro-Car as a daily driver are......??????????? :yum:
