Flint highlights & aftermath

After spending the entire day yesterday trekking in sub-freezing temperatures with snow falling over slushy ground, being soaked down to shoulder blades and up to thighs - thawing didn't occur until wee hours of morning. Not even a hot shower helped being chilled to bone.

Back at it today. Long lost place that stopped taking cars in 1973. Parts cornucopia!!!

There are more snow covered procars missed too including a '40s Buick ambulance. Will try to spot them before leaving.

That 59 Superior Pontiac Ambulance is a great find! Dad is putting the finishing touches on his 59 Superior Pontiac Hearse and has been trying to track down the last few pieces of trim. I assume that the side trim would be the same from either a hearse or ambulance. Care to disclose where this years is or send contact information?

Question for the procar historians: Other than C/B, who built on a '62 Olds extended chassis?

Found on same property yesterday after realizing I had walked by this procar twice the day before never recognizing what it was due to positioning and snow cover. Pics will happen either late tonight or early tomorrow once road trip is (finally) over.

I think I know what this particular unit is but it is contradictory to say the least!

Seeing the variety of fresh animal tracks in snow yesterday returned me to Boy Scout days. Typical rabbit, deer, raccoon, fox, squirrel, etc. Add wolf or coyote, and the most impressive were big cat tracks. From pattern and gait it couldn't have been anything but. Bobcat? Pretty cool.

Chuck and anyone else interested, it took almost 10 months to receive permission to be on this property. There is a small window between third week of April and first week of May where ground should be firm yet foliage not in bloom, TBD by amount of precipitation from now to then. I simply did not have enough time to remove all desired items in 2 days this trip so another is planned within that time frame. Left a list of items I'm taking next trip, which will also be 2 days. ('59 Superior Pontiac moldings are not included. :p) Will try to map property before returning to have a 'key'. Like the idea of saving time and miles trekked.

Opening opportunity to anyone that wants to join for next foray. Two have already expressed interest in going privately. This is a massive property in upstate NY. Although few cars are restorable, there are hundreds of desirable units one just doesn't see in typical junkyards any more among the thousands present. I believe there are more procars yet as well, as property owner's description didn't match what I came across, plus I found units he did not remember. If you're within a day's drive and want in on the fun, PM/email to be kept in loop. Closest hotels ($60/single) are 16 miles one direction and 12 miles the opposite direction. Property owner says Sundays are out and he prefers to have his Saturdays free, so most likely a M-F visit, although a Friday & Saturday trip is possible.

Sarah, you are very talented, beautiful work!

Thanks, Wayne and Bill! I was super bummed that I wasn't allowed to get any of my cars judged, but I'm glad that people liked my displays anyway. I missed the judging time cut off because I fell in the icy driveway when I was bringing my stuff in and I couldn't get up off of the ground because I was in so much pain. By the time I made it back inside and Atti helped me with everything, they said I missed the registration cut off time. Oh well - there's always next year. I'll bring the oldest coach again next February and the horsedrawn that I'm working on too. I have two new Danny Skivolocke themed dioramas that I'm working on that I'll bring next year as well.

As for my knee / leg from the icy fall, the school nurse was finally able to convince me today to go to the ER since my knee hasn't been getting any better. The ER doctor says there's still fluid around my knee and that it's not broken, but there's definitely ligament damage. I'm supposed to go in for an MRI next week. :(

You had some great displays Sarah! I love when modelers take their displays from real events! Unfortunate that you couldn't get them entered. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Take some time and get that Knee feeling better.

Last year, George had mentioned about introducing a diorama class to the judging since there were a few of that had more than just a car to display.

I wish that he would have come through with that because there were quite a few great dioramas this year. The Micro Meet as a whole has really been taking off over the past few years and people are really coming out of the woods with their creativity in the way of dioramas.

I know that it takes time and effort to build a model, but it also takes time and effort to create an appropriate scene to display that car.

sorry I did not even know that happened to you. I'm getting to the age were I try to be vary careful. next year come in and we'll go out and help carry stuff in. watch it will be sunny and dry next year.

John, I'm just glad that you were able to distribute beverages at the end of the night. I had run out of Advil by then so that really helped.

just in case you weren't there I'll add the shot of the car I brought. made a 53 ambulance.

'62 long wheelbase Olds as promised. I didn't crawl inside but plan on doing so in future. Believe it or not there are usable parts because of being on side for decades - kept animals at bay. Note tunnel light lenses.....!

Cleared snow for cleaner shot of metal area between side windows. (Still upside down mind you.)

Very Siebert-esque although probably a National as Steve mentioned. I have no like model pictures saved to compare this to. Only located Olds build plate so far.

Property owner says that all sheriff departments maintained ambulances in his area back in the day.

Latest vehicle I've ever seen using S&M lamps. :D

Yes, it's a National. Here's one to compare to, a '63 National Chevy, from the Northland PCS files. It definately has the same triagular panel with the round light. I think this also has the oval S&M lights.

National_ambulance_1085.jpg

I'm not sure if the Olds is restorable, but if it could donate its oval lenses to the restoration of another, it will have served a last, useful purpose.

(If you go back later, e-mail me, I'd come.)

Atti....Mr. Lichtman is correct. It is, or was, a National ambulance. The triangular section between the side windows is a dead give-away. This would be a rare car. According to the serial plate, it is, or was, a 1962 Oldsmobile and National used a Dynamic 88 Celebrity Sedan (4-door sedan) as the base vehicle - 62-3269.

Thanks for all the warm wishes. Don't get mad at anyone because I didn't get my cars judged though. It's ok. Bad luck on my part, but it's not the end of the world by any means. It's all good.

59 Pontiac superior

Attila, that 59 pontiac looks just like the rig that my competition ran.same colors too.Don't know how it would have gotten to that junkyard, but it's possible.

Great story behind their 59.they ordered it new,and the owner at the time, howard harder, flew down to Kosciusko, mississippi to drive his new rig home.

everything went fine, untill he arrived back home in niagara falls.on his first time backing the rig into the garage,he smashed the left rear quarter panel so badly that it had to be replaced.

it would be interesting to know if that is the same car.:blahblah:

Thanks atti for all you do!!!!!
