Ambulance Champlain

Ok straighten me out were they ford or Mercurys in Canada. I can never remember. the trucks were called Mercury I remember that. but no matter what they called them, they did some nice conversion on that body style up there. :thumbsup:
 
The link comes up blocked for me, it says that "organization policy does not allow access". But I'm at home, I have neither any sense of "organization" nor a "policy", I can see anything I want. Is the suffix correct, I've never heard of a "dot coop"?
 
Canadian Brands

Ed: I know that Ford (PICKUPS) were "MERCURYS" and (Dodge Pickups and Trucks) were "FARGOS".... at least in the mid to late 50's ......other than that.... not sure? MM

I was able to Google Image one of the two photos though.

And my guess would be it's a Demers conversion.

We had both. Ford LTD - Mercury Marquis, Ford Maverick - Mercury Comet (my first car).

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "In 1999 the Mercury brand was dropped in Canada, although the Grand Marquis was still marketed there wearing a Mercury badge through 2007."

Weren't the early Fords in Canada called Meteors?? I remember them having a different front end treatment than the Fords that were sold in the states.

Quebec had a long history of private ambulance services ."TMU" was a small ambulance service that started up as competition to" Champlain" in what is now called the City of Gatineau, " Technician Medicaux d'Urgence" was what they called their firm. Sometime in the 80's the medics started getting together and bought out the owners and ran the places themselves. A number of very substantial size ambulance services are now run as cooperatives or "employee owned companies" in Quebec..
There isn't a lot of profit in ambulancework but at least you can run your own show and turn the profits back into pay and working conditions.
One of my retired coworkers who covered racetracks as a sideline bought one of these regular wheelbase Ford wagon based hightops, although it was yellow by then and had a red/blue lightbar. I remember the red lollipops on the back. The stretcher just fit between the back door and the front seatback.
I don't remember the conversion firm but I think it was a Thunderbird wagon and had a massive engine.

METEORS for Canadian Ford Cars.... sounds right Paul.... Walt McCall would know for sure. (*) I was only in Canada once when I was (8) years for a day right after my folks and I took a train from California and picked up their new 1955 Olds at the Lansing, MI factory after watching it being built... you could do that back then.... (55) years ago! MM
