Can someone please explain how the Rico suction unit works? I believe it's attached somewhere to the engine? As always, thanks!

Some units from the early years were operated by a hand pump. In the later days, these units were powered by a battery that was often re-charged with a plug in inside the rear of the unit.

Rico vs. Laerdal
Rico Suction was the cylindrical unit that ran off of a vacuum line off of the engine and some units had a hand pump. Laerdal suction ran off the battery or had a inverter plug in.

Thanks. But I'm trying to understand how it was hooked up to the engine to create a suction. Was is simply electrical or did the engine actually do the "sucking"?

The engine is one big air pump, connect a tube to the intake and it'll draw a vacuum. Vacuum hoses connect to different points depending on what they're doing. If you can understand how a vacuum cleaner's hose works, that's how vacuum lines work. Same with the Rico syle suction. There was a line run to the engine intake. The other suction units mentioned used either a self contained bellows (the foot pump) or an electrically operated piston (Laederal) to create the suction.
