Yucky funeral homes in Flint

Andrew sent these pictures of a couple old closed funeral homes. Makes a grown man cry.

Thanks for sharing Andrew.

Look close and see if you can spot the "Rent-A-Cop" wanna be!

Man i would love to have the garage off the back of that place. I just priced out a 6 car across garage. Makes me cringe to think about building something like that in block. It could be some killer man cave digs!!!

The Funeral Home with the Rent-A-Cop strolling around in the parking lot is Brown Funeral Home. This place is absolutely enormous inside, and is still just beautiful on the inside, unlike the other Funeral Home (Reigle/Collins Memorial) pictured in Richard's album.

In case anyone missed it, here is some info on the place I had posted in the "Vintage Funeral Advertising" thread:

1949 calendar from Brown Funeral Home of Flint Michigan:

Opening in the late 1930's, and later expanded into an enormous 5-chapel Funeral Home, Brown's held over 900 funerals per year at its peak. It was closed in 2007 by then-owner SCI due to declining business. It's final full year of business saw only 485 funerals.

Did you read the last line...

In its last year they saw only 485 funerals !

That is a lot of funerals for most funeral homes.

Declining business with that many funerals is big business to most.

Wonder what the real story was.

Maybe Brady knows more about it.

This Funeral Home is huge. Apparently SCI decided 485 funerals is not enough to keep it operating. It is in a part of town that would certainly not continue to provide that kind of business if something was not done. SCI chose to operate some much smaller (new) facilities in different parts of town instead. I recently discussed this with the Funeral Director that has been with Brown since 1971. A sad story it is.

The "story" that I heard was that you saw a ghost, and came running out, "screaming like a girl" at a Beetles concert... I won't say who I am quoting to protect him from further embarrassment for having to save you... :pat:

I know who your referring to, and it wasn't screaming , i walked up to the other vehicle they where taking note's and i got into my car and looked into the rearview mirror i was as white as a ghost. i think there is only a handful of pcs member's that have gone into collins f.h. i just didn't get to see the chevette in the basement.

Brown's last addition........

Was built in about 1976 at a cost of over 1 million bucks. Problem was they were locked into a huge overhead and about half their business was stone welfare. Cant support a plant like that on welfare business at $600.00 a pop.
The former managing partner - who sold it to SCI in 1989 - has worked for me for about ten years.
