Windshield ambulance sign

I am thinking of mounting an ambulance sign on the dash of my 49 S&S combo, and was wondering what style letters would have been used. Since S&S used the Gothic lettering, would these signs also been in this style? Does anyone have the correct dash brackets? What year did the Funeral Coach/ambulance signs in the windshield dissapear, I dont recall seeing any after the early 50s.

John, my 1951 Superior had the 2 pin dash mount you mentioned. There were 2 chrome "holders" for the funeral coach or ambulance signs. I'm linking a picture of a sign I bought off ebay last year, it's an original early '50's sign... notice the slight curve to the sign to fit the contour of a dash better... surprisingly the pegs were threaded & screwed out so I could put it in the back window of my S&S in a more modern nameplate holder.
If you have a more modern funeral coach sign, i'll trade you this one so you have a period-correct one for your '49

I also have an old "invalid coach" sign with peg mounts, but no "ambulance" sign.

Thanks for the offer, dont think I want a Funeral Coach one just looking for an ambulance one, which I can get made by names unlimited, I just need to know what the correct lettering style would be. Any chance you have the original brackets still?

This is a good time to ask, I have always wondered this, what exactly is an invalid coach? I have heard the term many times.

Ron Devies said that "invalid coach" signs were used when our ambulances were being used to transport old and/or handicapped people to & from nursing homes, asylums, doctors, hospitals, etc.

Sorry I don't have the sign holders, they went with the '51 to Australia. If you want this invalid coach sign just let me know. It came from Ron, thats when he told the story of what the sign meant.

............

Does this mean that they switched them to "AMBULANCE" signs when used for emergency calls???

I don't know, being born in 1969 this stuff was way before my time...
Ron said they'd display the invalid coach signs on non-emergency runs

When I was a teenager, cars hadn't been invented yet... I only wish that I still had the car that I had as a teenager... Here is a link to a car that is exactly like the one that I drove. If there was any way to tell, I would place a bet that it is the very same car. My dad traded cars on a regular basis because he had a friend that was a used car dealer. Whenever he got another sharp looking convertible in stock, he would trade the "old" one for a newer one. In 1960, I did a full restoration of a high mileage 1955 Chevrolet, and drove that in college, till it died of burned valves, and I didn't have the time to repair it. It was Dusty Rose and Shoreline Beige originally with a gray gut. I repainted it light gray over dark gray. These are the two cars that I would love to have back today...

All jokes aside, that is a beautiful '57 Dodge Custom Royal Convertible Paul. You must have been very proud of yours!
You had a '55 Chevy in college, ironically I had a '55 Chevy 2-door wagon in high school. It was my pride & joy it was an old-school hotrod with a fiberglass flip nose. Got pulled over all the time for no front bumper, but it looked more cool without one and the nose wouldn't open with it on. It helped get me a job too, I drove it to Northland Dodge looking for a job as a car prepper. Dennis Wier (the owner) took one look at my '55 and said "Boy... if you can make my cars look 1/2 as nice as that thing YOU'RE HIRED!" and hired me on the spot. Oh to be 17 again...
