vinyl vs linoleum

Doing some research on what to install in the back of my 63. Found vinyl and linoleum flooring, but dont know if there is a correct choice, or incorrect choice. I did find a pattern thats almost dead on the original ppattern.

Not to hijack this thread, but it does somewhat pertain considering the title.
So, what is the difference between vinyl and linoleum flooring, and is one more durable than the other?

Linoleum is a cork & linseed product, and vinyl is a petroleum based product. Linoleum is correct for most professional cars that were build before about 1976. I believe that Sheller Globe / Superior started using vinyl in the downsized cars. Linoleum has no gloss unless you wax it, and vinyl has a glossy finish that is applied during manufacture. Linoleum is a much more durable material, and should be used if you can find a pattern that is period correct.

Sheet linoleum is still readily available through larger retailers in historically correct patterns, but at what point did the coach manufacturers switch from linoleum to vinyl flooring? I assume that it was at some point during the '60s.

Linoleum v. Vinyl

The pattern in linoleum goes all the way through, and is not just applied to the surface, as with vinyl. You won't wear out linoleum in your lifetime. Linoleum does have a definite smell to it, especially when it heats up. I purchased sheet linoleum about 10 years ago from Nebraska Furniture Mart for a bathroom that I wanted to keep period correct.

Kurt,

Any leads on where to find some Armstrong Colonial Classic?

Russ I installed the same Armstrong linoleum, I always wanted to find a balance of the original floor somewhere but was not lucky. I heard about an old flooring shop in Montreal, will check for the famous Colonial Classic.

I can check with NFM to see what they have available. Might be a week or so before I can get by there.

Armstrong Colonial Classic

Believe me, I have searched for this for years. I have about a square foot left from prior projects. The last roll I ordered (Home Depot) had some paperwork in between the rolls from the warehouse in Jacksonville. So i called them and they told me it is done. That was probably 8 years ago. I've even ducked into some flooring stores when out of town to inquire...hoping maybe there was some tucked away. So far, I get the same story.
Good luck!
Kevin
