Was at the "old car hangout" last night with my '54 and was approached by an English gentleman in his late 70s. He told me that when he was in his late teens he "apprenticed" as a casket maker back in England.
Bottom line is that for something to do, he decided to try and make an English style toe pincher from memory.
Its made of oak, with all the hardware imported from Britain. Lined with heavy silk. Then he says that seeing my coach reminded him that he had it tucked away in his basement. He wondered if anyone I know might be interested in buying it.
Well........Going to go check it out sunday morning. I'll post a couple of pictures after I see it. Who knows, maybe I'll upgrade from the casket I have now.
He talked for a while about doing pallbearer service for funerals that no family or not enough family showed up to. He'd get paid a "half a crown" for the time he was needed and if the Funeral director was in the mood, all the pallbearers got a shot o' whiskey. He'd be in his black suit, white gloves while the "lead" of the pallbearers walked ahead with his tophat, coat with tails, and black cane. Was cool to listen to a bit of history.
