tires

we got to discussing tires on a different thread. so though it best to again start a new one. I do see that corker now has a 890x15 that has the 3.5 in white wall that will handle over 2200 lb at 40 psi. these would be good enough to handle the wight of most of our cars. how ever most of us don't need that wide a white wall tire.

Firestone now has a extended load 235x15 with a narrow white wall, for other options. then the Kumo extended load. but if your wanting to run black wall tires you can get the 700 x15 in a bias ply or a radial. toyo and yokahama make the radials at up to 10 ply rating. hercules and most farm fleet type stores can get the 700x15 bias tires. in up to 10 ply. but watch them, the last set I got were 6 ply and only rated at 1900 lb. how ever for the Pontiac they were good. the difference is the 890x15 are a 31 inch in diameter the 700x15 are 30 and the 235x15 are 29. the 235 are a lot smaller then original tire on our cars.

I am almost certain I have seen pro cars, uncertain of what year, using a Michelin with a 1 - 1 1/2 white sidewall. Can anyone confirm or comment do these exist for the pro cars?

About 5 years back I bought Michelin Extra Load P235-75-R15 tires for my hearse.

A friend wanted to get the same tires for his 1965 Cadillac, non-procar.

They told him they were no longer available a year later. I check and nothing listed.

Last year I was looking for tires for my '62 and posted a thread. Lots of info in that thread. Search for it.

I ended up with Diamond Back tires with custom whitewalls. They can be any size up to 3.5". I got 1.5" as 3" are not what came on early '60's cars.

I had 1" of black then the 1.5" whitewall on the tires I had made up.

The tires made an incredible ride difference than the old bias ply tires I had on there.

The bias ply would make the car jump sideways when you hit bumps or it would follow the grooves in the road. Very scary at times !

The radials make the car drive like a dream.
So much of a difference I put the same tires on my '60 and both '62s.

The problem is that the DB tires are over 200.00 each.
I think about 215.00 a tire in 2011. 208.00 a tire in 2010.

I just ordered a set of tires for that '65 after a few years of him not getting any. I got him the American Classic P235-75-R15 with 1.6" whitewall.
I got them from Lucas in Springfield OH. They were 145.00 a tire.

He will be putting them on soon as the weather is getting better here but it would be a while before I can get a report from him.
It fricken snowed in Toronto tonight !

Others said they had good results with the A.C.'s in the other thread.

There are other options as well in this size from other manufactures.

Hope this helps,
Darren
