States' with Cell Phone issues

Since many PCS folks will be driving to Albany and will be using cell phones, which states have restrictions we need to be aware of.

I just heard today Georgia no longer allows you to drive and talk on your cell phone and I hear Connecticut has some tight rules.

Others?

The State of Washington just made it a primary offense to use a cell phone without a hands free device. This should NOT affect anyone driving to the meet in New York, however.

As of January 1, 2010, use of handheld devices while driving is illegal in British Columbia. A 31 day grace period was allowed during January, with police only handing out warnings. Full enforcement started on February 1, 2010. The penalty is a $167.00 fine. In addition, if you are caught texting or emailing while driving, 3 penalty points are applied to your driver license, resulting in an additional $81.00 cost when renewing your license.

Cell phone use is permitted while driving provided that a hands-free Bluetooth device or headset is employed.

I am greatly in favor of this law, having seen all too often the carnage that results from distracted drivers using cell phones. Frankly, I think the penalties are too low. I would like to see 30 days in jail for a second offense plus a 1 year driving suspension.

Minnesota does not allow texting while driving, however talking an a cell phone is still legal....and boy does it cause some bad driving!

I believe this is the same for most of Ohio now too. Not 100% sure about the phone part, still see a lot of people talking on phones so I think it is still legal. Columbus and Toledo both have bans on texting while driving for sure.

Connecticut and Massachusetts don't allow cell phone use, unless it is a hands free devise.

New York does not allow cell phone use, unless it is a hands free devise also.

I believe in Massachusetts it's a city to city law. It's illegal to use one while driving in Brookline but totally OK in Boston, Worcester and Springfield.

In Maryland, it's illegal to text while driving. It will become illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving without a hands-free device on October 1st.

Cell Phone use

In New Jersey it is also illegal to talk on a cell phone without a hands free device. And it's a primary offense which means they can pull you over just for talking on a cell phone

In Iowa its a city to city law. I am infavor of the law, there is so many wrecks, and bad driving because someone is on their phone or worse (which I see alot of) texting. I have even seen people on their laptop while driving :4_11_9:

Texting in Washington State is also banned as well as ANY cell phone use by people under 18. Tthe exceptions in the law are: Calling 911, emergency vehicle operators AND.......TOW TRUCKS!

Cell phones

I love them. They are almost as nice as snow and ice. Remember? I'm in the collision business. They are great for business.:):)
