Special NYFD Cruise in NSB

Bill Wright told me to keep an eye out for the NYFD fire truck that would be at the cruise last evening. This fire truck responded to the 9-11 World Trade Center fire. I've attached some pictures of the truck in the city and while the truck did survive it's crew did not!

Prayers to the family of all lost on this horrific day. "NEVER FORGET!"

To correct a very common error that lots of folks make........It's F.D.N.Y. (Fire Department city of New York), never NYFD. There is a fascinating story how the name came to be, I'll try to find it and post it up here.

BTW, thanks for the post Richard. Rescue 4's former rig has been "snowbirding" in Florida all winter. It and former Rescue 3 or 5 are being lovingly restored by a group in the Chicago area.

I can't believe I found it before my "edit" time ran out......

1870

The Metropolitan Fire Department continued to be the object of politics. On April 5th, the "Tweed Charter" was passed in Albany. The Tweed Charter abolished all state control over New York City. Among other provisions, it wiped out the Metropolitan Fire District, established a new Board of Fire Commissioners and the Metropolitan Fire Department became the "Fire Department of the City of New York". This act, indirectly, was responsible for the "F.D.N.Y." logo on apparatus instead of "N.Y.F.D.". Most departments place the city or town initials prior to "F.D." but as a direct carry over of the provision to create the "Fire Department of the City of New York", "F.D." was placed before "N.Y." on the apparatus, a tradition which lasts today.

On May 21st, the new Board of Fire Commissioners ordered the removal of "MFD" from all apparatus to be replaced by "F.D.N.Y."

Very cool. Didn’t know that retired rescue squad was now in Florida. But always good to remember and to save what we do have from that day.

(Reference the NYFD/FDNY name, the opposite happened in Washington, DC. Prior to the late 1800’s, the city department was known as the Fire Department of Washington, DC and abbreviated as FDDC. In the late 1800’s, with the merger of existing volunteer companies into the city (paid) department, the name was changed to the District of Columbia Fire Department, DCFD.

About 10 years ago, the name was changed to DC Fire & EMS Department, though the abbreviated DCFD remained until February 1, this year. On that day, the current fire chief mandated that nobody may wear apparel with the DCFD logo, and nothing on the apparatus may have the DCFD abbreviation.

It’s now, exclusively, DCFEMS! Really!)

Never Forget 9/11!
