Hope you all can find the show called 'American Pickers' on tv in your area. I just watched one episode that was filmed in Ohio. These guys opened the barn doors to see what is hiding in the barn. The building was full of horse drawn carriages, AND several horse drawn hearses. No procars but there was hearses.

American Pickers - hearses and ambulances

PCS member Alfred Newman of Dixon, Kentucky sent us a note about an episode of a new show on The History Channel called American Pickers. The episode, entitled “White Castle on the Farm,” involves a trip through central Ohio and a visit to the former Green’s Heritage Museum. Mr. Green’s collection includes 35 horse drawn vehicles including three hearses and an ambulance.

American Pickers’ “White Castle on the Farm” episode will air on The History Channel tonight at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, as well as on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 8:00 p.m. and on Friday, Feb. 19 at 12:00 midnight. For further information on the series, visit www.history.com/content/american-pickers

Alfred wonders whether some PCS member in Ohio might learn more about Mr. Green and his vehicles and have something published in The Professional Car magazine.

Horse-drawn Ambulance

Jeff, et al,

I am doing research on Civil War era ambulances with the intent of writing an article so find this posted info quite timely. I plan to pursue tracking down Mr. Green and his Heritage Museum to see if the horse-drawn ambulance happens to be a Civil War one.

Thanks to all for mentioning the TV program (unfortunately, I can't watch it as we don't have cable).

I too am a fan of this relatively new show on the History channel along with Pawn Stars.

The sad thing about watching it was my thought is that both the Husband and Wife are getting up there in years and eventually most of his collection will be dispersed...Probably never to be seen again.

dispersed

That getting up there thought occurred to me too. It also came to me that some folks will be able to track down this guy without too much detective work. They showed the interstate signs. They told you what county it was in. Not much needed here but a google map and a press of a button. The fact that the guy was selling now will give others the idea to track him down. From personal experience I can tell you that if it comes to a dispersal auction some of it will get 'lost' anyway. An auctioneer told me that several items were unsaleable. He wanted to trash them. We didn't and the DID sell. It just comes down to none of our collections will outlive us for long.

I did see this last week, and again last night. Very interesting fellow - how many folks do you know who collect buildings? Real buildings? I thought my[i/] collection took up some space.

Anyway, in one of his buildings, there were two horse-drawn hearses and a horse-drawn ambulance. They showed those briefly, with the hosts of the show making the usual jokes ("Duh, ya think the hearses are haunted?" ) and they ring the bell on the ambulance. All three look in great condition.

It would be good to know more about these (I didn't even catch the state, thanks, all). If someone has any more info, yes, it seems he might sell stuff (that's why he was on the show, after all, wasn't it?)

Bee, it was not a Civil War military ambulance. Looked to be a civilian, fully enclosed ambulance. I have no idea what make.

what state

Steve,
The old man and his farm full of buildings is in Ohio. I did my research (google) and found this guy and his place is only about 45 minutes away. South central Ohio. I will be checking this out when the roads clear and it is warmer.
I hope I will be able to get some info and pictures from Mr Greene.

:agree: I was ecstatic when i saw the barn doors open... I was mad  when they just bypassed such a fabulous find... They don't know what they're missing out on...

I have not seen this episode yet, but one of my co-workers said one of the hearses was grey. Is this true or was the ambulance grey?

One was grey...

One of the horse-drawn hearses was painted grey. The owner did mention painting it back to white, which must have been the original colors.

"If we repainted it back white, it'd probably bring $25,000."
The wheels did appear to have old white paint on them.

The ambulance was white, and reminds me of the one owned by the Sloan Museum in Flint, MI. It was on display during the International Meet last August.

The horse-drawn vehicles are shown in part 1 of "White Castle on the Farm" starting at 7:33.
