S&S Signed Sculpture Story in TPC

Tom Hoczyk

PCS Past President
I really enjoyed the story about the S&S Signed Sculpture hearse in TPC #134. Thanks to Walt McCall and a special thanks to Tom McPherson for a terrifically informative story.

I'm the fortunate owner of a '76 Centennial Edition Victoria, with all the markings including the Signed Signature "Angel of Memory" and embossed horse drawn hearses on the cloth. Marlene and I were able to visit with Willard Hess at his home only about two months before he died. In that visit, I remember him telling me that he is in the photo at the top of TPC page 4, leaning against the back fender of the Signed Sculpture hearse, his hand twisted toward the rear.

I also remember him telling me that his concept for the Victoria model was that of a tuxedo..... elegant, yet not ostentatious.

You can see pictures of my Centennial, including a photo of Willard Hess, at the link below. Tom

I agree

It is well-researched articles such as Tom McPherson's Signed Sculpture piece, along with the preservation of cars like Tom Hoczyk's Centennial Victoria that make PCS a first class organization for serious professional car enthusiasts.

BTW, congratulations to Tom H. for an excellent article and photos about his professional car interest & collection in the current issue of The Self Starter magazine (Cadillac & LaSalle Club.)

TPC-134 on S&S's

I totally agree with he posts from Tom and Tony.... and personally commend Walt McCall and Tom McPherson on all they have done for the hobby. (*) I still regularily refer to (THE) "Black Book" and other publications they have collaborated on over the years. Can you imagine what it will be worth in another 50 years?

Before receiving TPC-134.... BTW.... that once again has been masterfully put together.... I thought I knew quite a bit about S&S's owning a couple and reading what was available at the time.... but they truly were a very prestigous and well built coach apparently from day one and weren't shy about pricing them that way too..... as in you get what you pay for.

When we first bought our former 1973 S&S-Medic Mark-I Ambulance from the (Twin) Lange Brothers in Canada who delivered it to me at the PCS Convention at Minneapolis... I contacted the Fort Wright (KY) "Life Squad" (Fire Dept) who ordered it new. They had pictures and posters of different fund raising activities and events in local parks and other locations at least a year before they ordered the car including an old hand painted "thermometer" of funds raised to date including single dollar donations from local school kids etc. They knew what they wanted and made no bones about it was the most expensive (BUT THE BEST) money could buy at the time!
