This happened to our Department many years before I started. Most recently we transported an intoxicated male to the ER. He decided to leave the ER when security turned there heads for one moment. He proceeded out to ambulance bay and found an ambulance from the next town over outside running and warm. He drove it home, striking several mailboxes and and a large tree in his yard. The police found him resting comfortably in his own bed. They arrested him and he did prison time! Needless to say we called our neighboring Fire Dept. and asked them from time to time if they knew where their ambulance was.

Installing GPS units is an expensive solution to just removing the keys from the ignition when the vehicle is parked. If they are paranoid that it must be kept running to keep it warm, then they could just have an automatic start installed. With those units, the engine will run without the key in the ignition, and when you push on the brake pedal to put it into gear, the engine will stall, unless you insert the key and turn it to the run position. A GPS unit will tell you where the vehicle is, but it won't keep the operator from doing stupid things like trying to outrun the police car that is chasing it.

We had a Unit take a Pregnant female Involved in a Domestic Fight to one of our Local Hospitals. a short time later she was released to go Home. She called a Cab and Was tired of Waiting for the Cab to Arrive. She then Stole The Ambulance that had dropped her off at the E/R. The Vehicle was Found in Front of Her Apartment complex. The Irony of all this was the Paramedic Driving the Unit Is Also a Police Officer in that same township
