rear window trims

Anybody who ever worked on a M-M can tell me the proper way to remove the trims that follows the rear windows of the car thru the back on each side of the door without damaging them?

I looked at few restoration pictures on the board and didnt found the info!

Thanks!

I'm guessing your referring to the thin trim just under the glass and around the back door separating the top from the lower body. since you did not state the year I'll toss out the generic method. starting at one corner up front use a flat bladed object slide it under the molding and twist. it will pop off the clip or you will find resistance. if you find resistance move a little farther back if it still won't pop off then it's t bolted threw the body. you will have to remove the interior to get at the nuts. if it's a 71-76 they used a metal tab to hold it on the rear by the back door. if it hasn't rusted away remove it there from from the bottom first using the same flat blade ad twist. then lift it off the tap. all trim is eather screwed on or put on with plastic clips or t bolted threw the body. anything 90 and up is glued on with double edge tape. never pry of force trim to remove it or you will be looking for more. if you can't twist it off then look on the back side for what is holding it on. some will use a combanation of methods to put them on. it's all guess work on each and every car.

Yup that trim!

It's actuallt a 1970, So I guess it's surely some plastic clips. The little part of the trim on each side of the door was glued from a previous restoration and I saw the remains of those clips.

I just can't figure how I can remove all the interior for one screw but will see !!

On my 1969, the trim was held on with plastic clips and one of two metal stud clips. In my case, the metal clips were so badly rusted, that they just broke leaving the stud in the metal, which needs to be removed before painting, and a new stud clip installed to hold the molding down. I believe that the metal stud clips are in the rear where the molding makes a 90 degree turn from the quarter panel to the rear body along the lower edge of the rear side window. If you damage the stainless molding, it can be repaired, but at a cost that will make you cringe.

Thanks to everyone, I will follow your recommendations when I will remove it, I was just asking before doing something wrong!!

I had to gut this last one to get the outside trim off of it. but unless some one did something unusual that will come off from the out side on a 70. the big pieces of cardboard on the rear corners will come off easily. take the top off the fender wells first and they just about fall off. that will give you access to the pillar. the biggest challenge in rebuilding any of these cars is to reverse what everyone else did. you get a lot cobbling in 40 years. there is what do I have here right now to hang this trim on and there is the right way to do it. but even the right way has a lot of variations. :pat:

broke out the 68 to get it checked out and cleaned up for our fall trip. while washing it I knocked the belt line molding loose . so I took a look. there is a t bold that will have to be accessed from the inside right in the center of the last pillar. there is at least two of them if not more. the plastic clips are near the door.

My '69 has a metal clip that bolts through the body just where Johns fingers are. Just glad that it isn't my problem putting it back.. it is Johns problem now.

the only good part is it's all ready apart on the inside so I don't hove to take it apart and put it back together. then when I go to redo this 68 I'll know how not to mess up. but did we ever get decided whether or not the plastic clips were the same on the Mercedes? how come the grone button dosn't just groooone

To anyone interested... the metal studs screwed were on each end of the trim at approximately 3 inches of each end, and there was another one right in the middle. So it means 6 for the 2 moldings, 30 minutes each I will explain why! The rest was took in place by plastic clips. I didnt broke anything, even the metal studs.

I had access to them by the two interior sides only by removing the top of each. The hardest part was to reach the bolts with my hands. Fortunately Im 6 f tall... but have small and delicates hands (believe me or not I wear the sixe "small" for gloves) :) so I was able to fold my hands and join the bolts with a screwdriver. No one of my friends were able to get the bolts.

I can now assume that the trim was installed on the car BEFORE the interior... or Miller-Meteor used to have kids to work on.. !!

30 is not bad. bet it took 10 just to find that center on the first time. since we have to do this on a 68 the information is valuable
