Rear Handset Question

I do not know much about radios, so I am looking at the collective for advice.

I now have all of the components for the radio in the cab area, and I am waiting for a handset for the patient compartment.

When I install the handset in the patient area, would it need to be connected to a radio head like the picture below?


Or would the handset be connected directly to the (imaginary) radio body?


I hope this makes sense........

Not sure this is any help or if it is even correct, but this is what I have in the rear area of my 73 Lifeliner. I do not have a speaker anywhere back there.

I think it could be either way. Most of them were controled from up front with the handset just being a extension of the mike. Driver would set the channel attendant would talk threw the handset. It was not a cell phone but could be used as a radio phone. The base unit would be connected to the phone line so the dilier would be in back so the driver did not have to try doing that and drive. Crude but effective , over

The dialer was used to tone different hospitals for patient reports.
If anybody has a dialer I need two.

There were really no other locations for the handset to go, and definitively no space for a rear radio head.

This is an actual GE handset so it matches the GE radio in front.
