Powering an Aspirator

Any ideas on how to provide vacuum to an aspirator? Looking into some sort of small pump, that could be thrown together from like Lowes, or a home improvement store. The lead acid battery in my portable suction unit, leaked out, maybe from leaving it plugged in. I tossed it, so I got an idea of just making a Rico RS Hand Pump Aspirator into a powered unit. It would be for actual EMS use. Haven't been able to find any usable replacements on ebay, just looking for ideas from the idea experts, hence why it's in the off topic category.

Chris, there aren't too many small electric pumps that would work, outside of medical suction pumps. If it's for actual EMS use, you're probably better off buying an actual, working suction unit, even a used one. If you try to make something, then use it and it doesn't work out, you could have suit issues as it's not FDA appoved, yadda yadda yadda. :blahblah:

If you're looking for something usable, small, and inexpensive, try a Rescue-Vac, hand-pump suction unit, it's only like $12.

the hand held units are a good investment for standby. all the powered stuff you have to use a lot to maintain it. a big bulb with the tip cut bigger is just as good. but takes up half the room. now if you leave it for 5 years or so with out looking at it you may find the bulb rotted out. guy puts together a kit them locked it in his trunk and doesn't get it out again won't find anything in there you can use when you need it most. the two most important tools in any EMS kit is the willing hands and a working brain. the other stuff is just extra.

Chris I have 2 rechargable suction units. I think they are Medtronics. They have been in storage for awhile, but iirc one of them worked and the other was for parts. Let me dig them out and I'll give you the details. If it works it's yours. PM me and we can meet up. You know how to get to my hospital right?

I carry two Ambu Res-Cue Pumps, $56 a pop.. I was just thinking of a way to have a higher volume aspirator, b/c quick EMS response isn't always an option. It would be for Quick Response application, not for ambulance use. I have my eye on a new Laerdal unit w/ an 800ml canister. Thanks for the replies.

Actually I was at RPH, about six times this week. Towanda has been on diversion of patients that may need the ICU. I stand out, I wear a white jumpsuit. I submitted the order for a LCSU3 around 8pm, through Life-Assist. I've used the Ambu quite a few times on arrests to wrecks, actually had to replace a few. Still have a few canisters left, I figure when they're gone, I'll switch to one of the generic cheap models.

Chris,

My stuff is in a storage unit in Waverly. I'll go this weekend and see exactly what I've got. The units I have are about the size of a Laerdal.

If you end up at RPH about 1 in the afternoon during the week, swing by and I'll take you to lunch. Or just come up to 4 Green in the Clinic.

Chris,

We have those on the ambulances. Great way to aspirate vomit, into the motor. Someone gets tunnel vision on an arrest, picks it up w/ the pump going. Bam. Done. No, thanks for the offer, I ordered an 800ml aspirator. I also bought a hand pump and base for my Rico on eBay.. I had that part before, but gave it to a local company that had a vacuum mattress, with no pump.
