Pontiac 455 Pictures

Spent last week on the phone with Paul changing the water pump on my 72 Pontiac and discovered that the previous owners along the way did some crafty engineering. I found a Ford fan, make shift alternator mounts (perhaps even insufficient alternator), and questionable power steering pump mounts.

Can anyone either take a picture of their 72'ish 455 engine or point me to a stock photo? My shop manual on disk is not that clear. I really need the top areas, etc.

All I find on google are performance pictures.

Thanks...again.

Terry,
Here are some Engine pictures of my 1970 455 Pontiac Funeral Coach I did a couple of years ago. These are all I have at the moment on this computer. I have more detailed pictures on a disc. Most components are common between these years. If you need any parts or part numbers looked up let me know.
Thanks,
Aaron

AAron -

VERY nice looking engine...and I have a ways to go to get to that point. I can see right off that I am missing the correct mounts on both the AC compressor and the alternator: the large black brackets that you have. I need to rescale my engine pics, but have one in the forum showing my current status. (I have removed some of the wasps nest since I got it!)

Terry, if your car was originally equipped with a Leece Neville or other high output alternator the bracketry would have been modified by Superior. I would suggest findind picks of another ambulance. Aaron's car is very nice, but it's not a high top ambulance.

were not a poncho here is a shot of the engine on my 72 olds with the big alternator on it. they would have done something like this for the one on your car. will OK the picture doesn't show the bracket. it's a steel plate setting under the alternator with a hole drilled into it for removing the front spark plug. looks for all the world like it was built in some garage some were. if that sounds like what you have then I can take a better picture of that set up and post that one.

Paul and I were talking today along the same lines. Most likely this was modified along the way in its history. I do have a Leece Neville I believe sitting on the '76 Cadillac that I could use if I part it out...

Engine Area

Terry,

I can Provide you with pics of whats left of the Engine Compartment of my 1970 Superior Pontiac Bonneville Hi-Top Ambulance (with the 455 Engine)
I could also supply you with some pics of the Parts and Pieces that I have Removed from the engine (For Bracket References)
I'm working on a Number of Pro-Car Projects and this happens to be one of them, I'm working on Removing the Engine and Tranny and having them gone Completely through as this car had been sitting in a Field/Barn for close to 10-15 Years.
I am having Issues removing the Water Pump from the Engine Block as well, seems over the Years the Bolts have tried to become one with the Block, so I've expressed plenty of Choice words toward the Pump, but that doesn't seem to help any

Just send me an E-Mail or a PM and I'll try and get you some pics of what you need this weekend.

Best of Luck to ya,
-Ryan

If the water pump bolts are giving you grief, then heat the heads with a torch after you have everything else out of the way. Then throw some cold water on the red hot bolts, and let it cool. They should then just come out of the block with no great effort. The heat and chilling will usually break most bonds. I wouldn't reuse the bolts though. Heat is your friend when it comes to stuck bolts and rust. I have also been known to strike the head of the bolt with a hammer first, and then use a large flat tipped punch on the sides of the bolt head to shock everything in different directions. This will loosen the most stubborn of bolts usually. Don't force it, get a bigger hammer. :D
