we got it running good so it was time to replace the rust. got new springs in the rear and brakes and the patch panels in place. for the first time since I have owned it it now has back up, license plate, and load lights that work. as it's the daily driver we changed the windshield this trip to. the interior will be phase 3 but for now we need to heal up some. so we'll trade places with the 58 I'm wondering when the last time this eureka spent the night inside.

Rocky, the 58 Eureka is owned by Pcs member Virgle Onnen. He has a great collection of pro cars, including a 58 Eureka ambulance, 61 Eureka combo, and some newer coaches, he was in Ohio and is an active Iowa Hawkeye Chapter member, lives and owns a funeral home in Ill.

Ed, or Rocky, I have a primer question. I see people using different color primer on different projects, is this just a preference or is there a different result in what the grey, or red do?

the car belongs to Virgle Onnen. long time member form Sterling Il. the goal is to make it navy blue with the red and gray interior. right now we are floating pieces in and out of the platter and I'm getting it to run on it's own. while we look for the few pieces it's missing. anyone got the quarter trim for a 58 Eurkia laying around?? I'm in a binder on it as Brendan sent my 72 out to Virgle and it's being held hostage till I get going on it. I may never see that car again.

the different primers have different proprieties. the red has a heaver pigment in it but it sands like a rock. the gray (platinum) sand easy but is doesn't fill as much you don't find the dark gray a lot anymore. then there is the back ground for the more translucent paints. a darker primer will make a light top coat darker.
the lighter ones are harder to cover over. now me I like to mix the red and gray it gives you a light purple color that fills well and sands easily. plus you know it's yours. but really it's what ever the parts house sells. there is so much stuff out there at so many different prices I just quit them all and went back to what worked in the 70's. hay that's what I'm working on.

Looks like john is using lacquer primer, its not even legal to sell that anymore around here. I usually use urethane primers. Like john said a lot of colors are pretty transparent now days so primer choice needs to be considered if you are not going to seal it with spray sealer before you paint. That is another practice that i do all the time now i have had colors where i have layered 8 or so coats down and you could still see the primer spot, so if you seal it in a solid color that will not happen. The pros to Lacquer primer is it is cheap and the over spray is dry in about 36 inches distance, urethane will stay active "sticky" for a long time so you need to have the whole car covered and every thing else around if you don't want it covered with over spray. Lacquer will chip easy on impact Urethane will not. Some of the differences in the primers.

I did not know that any other states except calf had outlawed products. man that will be the death of the shops as it drives prices up for the rest of us. you wounder were every time you go to get something it's been discontinued or they price is up 10 to 25%. so what does it cost you to spray a cup of primer using the urethane not counting the cost of covering the car and the booth. that is a two part primer or you get it ready to spray? the shelf live mixed is what 24 hr? me I'm getting to old the learn all the new ways. using the old fashion method buying the primer by the gal and the thinner by the 5 gl bucket I get about $12.30 a quart going threw the gun today. I used 2 on what I did here. then after we block we'll use two more before we are ready to paint. I'll get around 50 buck in primer and 150 in paint to make this one back orange.

sub h top

what memories these pictures bring to me, in high school i was delegated to driving my dads 72 to school. he bought two 72s in 71 and they were both from gordon k allen in dallas. the one i drove to school had actually been wrecked when we first got it and after it was repaired it was delegated to me. i would have rather have had a hot rod but it was better than the bus, he bought a new 73 while mine ws in the shop{new body style} and thats how i got to drive it after it was repaired. it nwas put back in service and used as a first out unit again until it was replaced with a 76 high top whrrled coach{he boght 3} i then used it while my chevelle {66 ss396} was getting fixed for about 5 monts. lovd them wish i could find another one id keep it till...probaly forever love em. mine had beacon, flat mounted flashing 1156 bulb lites and p 100 and and the almighty q2. sure miss it.

unfinished without equipment or? trying to buy a 66 close to me that needs redone but nothing i haven't done before. lets see drive to SD and drive it home. hmmm, or just have coffee and visit. i know we don't know each other but i take it you do this for a living or just for the fun of it? i don't know because well i don't know. I'm new to the PCS but not to the cars as i grew up with them. my dad would buy cars[procars] and sell them to people that for whatever reason could not go to a bank and so i learned while also making ambulance calls everyday.now I'm in the used car business and trying to retire but our great leadership in Washington has delayed that. OK rattling on but if i did stop in for a cup of coffee how much do ya think it would cost me to leave with a unfinished [or painted] hightop suburban?

I just noticed the landau bars on the outside of the garage, nice touch. I have a pair on my dining room wall, and another set I was going to put on the inside garage wall somewhere, but I kinda like this too.

Ed, I think you need to sell that ambulance..you need the room to start working on my 48 Henney-Packard 3-way!

Ed already has enough work in progress to keep him busy for a long time into the future. He has work in progress in various stages of dissassembly............

1) 1969 Miller Meteor Ambulance
2) 1968 Miller Meteor Combination
3) 1958 ??? Cadillac Hearse
4) ??? Studebaker truck of some sort
5) ??? Jeep

and a wife that would also like to spend some time with him, not to mention the guard dog that "demands" some personal time with Ed...

Now, do you think that his selling the Suburban ambulance is going to make a difference? I don't... :yankchain:

John, sorry i have been off the board for a couple of days here. You are right on the cost of the primer not cheap. It will run about $40-$50 a quart of material in the gun. The pro side of it is in the high solids primer, one coat is equal to about 3 coats of the lacqure prime. And the strength of the prime against rocks and stuff is amazing. The pot life till the primer if it has the hardner in it is just a couple of hours and it will kick. And you need a spray gun with a big tip like a 2.0 tip to spray it out. I always say is my garden hose, but if you have too small of a tip you get a super small fan with it. The other nice part urethane primer is if you do not sand it. It is sealed up and you can put it out in the rain and it will not soak in water. you could drive it in winter and not be all rusty. The other thing that i use befor i prime is a acid etch zinc chromate prime down to etch the steel befor i put the primer on. That is also about a $100.00 a gallon also. but makes a great foundation for a long lasting paint job. So that give some of you guys a idea why paint jobs are so expensive materials are not cheap. I custom painted my wife mazda miatia a orange sunset pearl 3 stage paint job and i had $2800.00 just in paint, sealer, pearl, and clear, not counting primer for it.
On the not legal thing here in wisconsin, this state seems to follow california when they pass laws. You cannot in a shop situation spray with a old high pressure spray gun. if they come into your shop and see you using one it could be a $1000.00 fine, and you have to have a spray gun cleaner, and you need to keep logs of the V.O.C.'s "volitile organic compounds" the amount of solids you emit out of you spray gun that goes out your spray booth. So that is some of the pain in the butt stuff you have to deal with. So all you guys that dont have to deal with that you are lucky. When i had to buy the stuff to keep the goverment happy i had about $500-600 a spray gun compared to $175 in the older high pressure guns a $1000.00 in a spray gun cleaner, and a cost of a contract to have the waste paint removed. It wont suprise me if in time they will not let you buy paints unless you are registered businness with the state.

we will be all running to Mako for our paint jobs. the big dollar boys have there ways to cut out the small shops. then to if you can't get it repaired you have to buy a new one. the pot live is what drives me away. I don't use that much and to mix only what you need is little dabs at a time is frustrating. but the Dupont primers have been none porous for a long time now. they sell the etching in spray booms. so we use them for our base coat. but Paul's 69 is a example of what we are talking about. the man that started on it striped half the hood and sprayed the self etching on it then walked away for a year. the panel is rusting threw the primer on the half he did. so we will strip that off when we do it. the hood on Virgle's 58 is one more it had been strip and primed also then let sit out side. the best thing to do if you not going to get around to it soon would be to put a layer of any paint over the primer. but then it only going to be a few days till we get back to it right?? I got to re do the vent on the sub to get it inside now that I have put new springs under it.
