Pennsylvania State Trooper Killed in the line of duty...

This happened very close to home here. Please keep this Trooper's family in your thoughts.

Trooper Paul Richey was a 16-year veteran on the force.

A case of domestic violence has cost a Pennsylvania state trooper his life.

Authorities learned late Wednesday night that the man, who they believe shot Trooper Paul Richey, also killed his wife and then himself.

Pennsylvania State Police investigators said Richey was killed when he and Trooper Jason Whitman were called to the home of Michael and Nancy Smith.

Police said Richey was hit by a bullet fired from inside the Smith's home.

Richey was a 16-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police. He leaves a wife and two children.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has ordered flags across the state be flown half staff in Richey's honor.

This is horrible, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I come from a family of police and firefighters, this is never pleasant.

Out here in Washington State, since Oct 31, we have had 6 policeofficers killed in the line of duty and 2 others shot. Four of them were killed at the same time. My dad was 32 years a NYPD officer. My condolences to the PSP officers family

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Troopers family and friends.

Trooper was a relative and friend...

First of all, let me say thank you for all of your thoughts and prays for Trooper Richey's family. Paul Richey was a relative of mine, my mother's (Sheri Russell) maiden name was Richey. Paul's grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. It has been a difficult week here in this little town. Nothing like this hardly ever happens, and then for it to be so heinous and cruel. As Paul was exiting his car, he was shot in the neck from a second story window. He didn't even have a chance to shut the door on the car, or even defend himself. He actually volunteered to go to the call, as he had been there many times before and thought he would be able to diffuse the situation. The gunman then shot his wife, and then himself. Paul leaves behind a wife (Carrie) and two children; Connor, 9 and Catherine, 6. He was certainly buried as the hero he was, with over 1200 PA State Troopers here for the funeral, full military honors and the funeral was televised.
I want to thank ALL of the members of law enforcement for what they do, every day, in order to put themselves in harms way for the rest of us to be safe. Please continue to pray for Paul's family as they continue to absorb all of what has happened and adjust. Thank you Charles for posting this in the first place, as you can imagine, I have been just a little busy this last week.....thanks again.

until it effects us personally we only think of things as numbers. being a officer is one of the jobs that you never know when. just like this time. I can't say anything that will make the loss any better or his job any more meaningful. but I am truly glad there are people out there that do the job. so that most of us can relay on them when we need to. senselessness is a hard thing to except. I hope that his wife and daughters can get around what happened. from what you have told us there is good support for them. the hard part is still down the road for them. that's when the people close to them are really necessary. I do wish them well and let them know there are a lot of us that do so.

Too Close to Home

Our thoughts an prayers go to the Troopers family. If we get a tty in no doubt we will send units to the funeral as Hermitage is not that far from us. One of my officers will soon be decorated as Stark County Police Officer of the Year from a similar incident. A domestic where the hubby wacked out, tied up his wife and forced her to watch religous TV shows to purge her of the demons. She escaped and called us to "take a report". Taking a report was a single officer response that when he arrived he met the hubby in his jammies wearing a 9. My guy wrestled the gun from him and cuffed him. The subsequent investigation yielded 16 seized guns including 3 50 cal machine guns and over a thousand rounds of belted ammo and pipe bombs and bomb making equipment. It could have gone south real fast and with that kind of ammo we could have lost some people and been pinned down for days. It is a damn shame we cannot call in air strikes.
I guess if there is good news to my story is thanks to this piece of work my department now owns several of his guns including two uzis, an AR15, 2 Remington 870s, a S&W 4506 and the 9mmP. The rest of his toys went to a military preservation group here in the township.
