Oval S&M Lens

That's a good price for one. I now have have the missing one for over the rear door our our '54 Packard and (2) for the tunnels on our '56 Superior-Pontiac Ambulance (in queuing) so I am set on GLASS S&M's for now. MM

It has some pretty severe scuffing, but that should be something that a glass professional could polish out.

any Ida what it came off from. looks like a add on stop/taillight for something not pro car related. you know they did not just use these lenses on only pro cars.

Could have been on anything. The only value is in the lens anyway. The housing is worthless.

S&M made an assortment of oval lamps in the early part of the century up until the late 50's but they weren't all red. Same glass lens, but clear for driving and amber for fog. I believe all three part numbers are cast into the glass. They all go for big bucks in nice condition. Couple years ago at Auburn a guy was asking $425 a PIECE for complete driving lights with clear lenses. As far as I know they were never standard on any vehicle, they were an aftermarket piece, so they didn't "come off of" something else and get repurposed. I've always heard tales of the red lenses being used on Superior school busses, which could be true, but Superior also used a plastic oval light on some busses, which looks the same from a distance, but is completely different in every respect, including size. They are not replacements for each other.

Here is one example of non-pro car use (this would have been the flat lens, the domed one came a little later):

To my knowledge, Superior never used the glass S&M lenses on their school buses from the factory. Superior did start using plastic oval lenses on their buses in 1957, but the only similarity is in their shape to the S&M lenses. The Superior lenses are plastic, slightly larger than the S&M lens, and they attach with screws that go through the lens itself. The plastic Superior lenses clearly say "Superior Coach" in the plastic lens mold.
