outfitting an ambulance

What would you put in an early 60s ambulance? I have the gurney. I have one ambu bag and an oxygen bottle holder. I know there should be more. So start me a list. I know some of you have first hand experience. Now jog your memories and tell me what else I should/could have in the back of my coach. Thank you for your help.

Depends...

Extra folding stretcher, oxygen bottle c/w regulator and oxygen mask, E&J resuscitator (the big heavy one!), the ambu bag would have to be one of the old black styles, wool blankets, linen, pillow, "first aid kit" (nothing fancy...bandages, triangulars, gauze, tape), possibly padded wooden splints or a Thomas ring splint, and most importantly during that era alot of good-will and desire to assist (maybe a heavy foot when needed as well);).

Combinations had less.

Thanks Bill for starting the list. Maybe I should have mentioned that I am not or ever been involved in EMT or paramedic work. So some of the terms and abbreviations may mean little or nothing to me. I know ambu bag because my wife was an inhalation therapist years ago.
A black ambu bag? I have a very nice clear one to trade for a black one. I think there is also an extra oxygen bottle in the barn. No gauges or regulators.
Also my coach is a combination.
I know it may take a while to aquire everything you all will recommend. But we have a start.

the most a combo would have is a small first aid kit. if your car has the under floor storage maybe a folding back board and short board. look at the car and see what you have for storage room. think that they would want it so they could convert back to a hearse with out having to remove a lot of stuff. so if you can't store it in a compartment or on the gurney you would not have had it in the car. the most a 60 combo would have offered is a quick trip to the hospital or routine transfers from hospital to hospital kind of thing. or they would be used for removals. as they had the set up for the gurney they could use the car easily that way.
 
Mike, I am setting my 63 Cadillac up with a gurney, folding stretcher, E&J Resuscitator, splints and bandages, and all are period correct. Hope this helps,and good luck!:thumb:
 
What type of cot?

Hi Mike...what type of cot do you have? Post a picture if you can as well as the serial number if it's a Ferno Washington and we'll be able to date it for you. One of the quickest ways to spot "non-period correct" gear is the cot. Older is always better than newer (watch everyone jump on that comment!).

We will have to ask Sandy if older is better than newer. Oh wait a minute, we weren't talking about Paul here were we?
Next time I go to the barn I will pull the cot and see if I can find the info on it. If memory serves I have been told it is a Ferno model 30. I will have to figure out how to post pictures here.
Have gotten some answers here and some phone calls about the items I may need for the patient area of my 61 M-M combination.

Would a stainless steel bedpan do? I think I know where one is in an old collectibles/antique/junk shop here in town.

Well, while I haven't studied the exact ages/dates of bedpans or urinals to the extent that, say, we can date stretchers.....I'd say, yes, get it. I won't take off points in the judging as long as you don't secure it with suction cups. :yum:
 
bed pan is one of those things that gets left in after a transfer. but if you do get it look on the bottem and see if it has a US military stamp. if it does I'll trade you a hospitale one for it. the stamp would look something like this

serial number

The serial number tag on my gurney reads: B 84947 It was 11 degress in the barn so I was not wanting to spend much time there. I can go back and get more info from the patent tag or whatever else you may need. Will have to remember to take the digital camera with me too.

Hi Mike...that's pretty chilly.

Based on the serial number you provided that cot would have been manufactured in 1971.

Thanks for the info. When it gets warmer (35 or more) I will get back to the barn and check the other gurney. They both look alike to me. Both have light green matress. Both have red pads on the handle. Will let you know what the next has for a number. Now I am wondering what was on the one I sold at Hershey last year.

check to be sure there aren't two tags. if they sent it in to be refurbished ferno would up grade and re tag them. had a couple 29s that way. both these tags are on the same gurney

Thanks for the pictures and info. I will be checking to see if either of the gurneys have more than one tag. When it gets a bit warmer here I may make a trip to Wilmington to see what I can find Ferno-Washington. Wilmington is only an hour south of me. All these years I never knew F-W were there. What could you find in the odd garage sale there?
