Any idea why the casket lid is opened in the hearse? Caption says the casket is to be brought into the church for the funeral.

I've been to a funeral during a snow storm in January in S/E Nebraska where the casket was sitting on the lowering device at the cemetery with a lid that wasn't latched! I couldn't believe it! That funeral home just did a horrible job on everything!

This procedure is used to keep from having to reposition the body for an open viewing in church. It also prevents the lid from touching the face or having cosmetics soil the interior. This is not a good practice to follow. I believe it is always best to lower the body then raise it again.

You always lower the person and lock a casket anytime you transport. At least it was feet first. When I got here the staff and FD's placed the casket in the hearse head first claiming if they had to stop in traffic the body did not shift as bad. Makes sense but not the way it is done.

I always wondered that- I'll be correcting my 1:18 scale model's caskets when I get home. Thanks!

we use a kleenex box to prop up the lid if we have to move it from room to room just so the lid doesn't touch the face but never in the coach ! it amazes me what some F.H. do
