News From New Jersey

Dan Herrick

PCS Life Member - Upstate Chapter President
Just got off the phone with Mary Hookway. She told me that the Jersey crew (Northeast Chapter) are all OK which is good news. They all have a power outage so this means that the Sunday Chapter meeting has been canceled. They are having problems getting calls out as well, phones are out, she had to call from the squad building. The word is that gasoline is at a premium at this time, thats if you can get it at all, in part due to all those that are running generators. Just makes me think how thankful those of us should be that the only problems that we had was a little rain and some wind.
So hang in there my Northeast Chapter friends you are in my prayers and thoughts.

If you hear anything more on Jersey folks, please post and keep us all up to date. Jersey member Wayne Guy bought my nice 86 Eagle Pontiac and is good people. I fired off an email to him but with power sit, might be a while before he gets to see it.

I talked with Northeast Chapter President Dan McCann and he said the only thing working as far as communications goes is cellphones.

62 Limo might be underwater

I spoke with former and soon to be member again David Sabonjian on Nov 1. His 1962 Cadillac Divider Glass Limo is parked in his mothers garage in Belmar NJ. He just called and said the car is in about 15" of salt water. He can't get in the garage at the moment, but as soon as he does he'll be able to give me a full report. They are still out of power in the area now, 5 days in.

150 Ontario Hydro workers are en route, guess they have been directed to the Boston area,we are hoping and praying for all affected.

I bought my 63 from David, he is a great guy. My 63 was in that garage. I will call him next week.

It is going to take a lot of cleaning, however, it can be saved. I saved cars that were totally submerged in salt water, and that was back in the 1960's. Today, with high pressure pressure washers, it isn't that difficult to wash away the salt. He will have to totally strip the interior, and most of the interior will either need to be washed, or replaced. Same with brakes, they will need to be cleaned throughly, and reassembled. With 15" of water, it still isn't high enough to get into the engine, transmission, or differential. I just hope that he has sufficient insurance on the car to pay for all the work and materials that it is going to need. If it was under insured, then the insurance company is just going to call it a total loss, pay him the face amount of the policy, and then sell the car for salvage. We have seen this happen in the past unfortunately.

no power

Jeff and I are still without power at our home. It might not be restored for a few more days. It's getting cold!

Get Jeff one of those headlamps,a stack of TPC's,hunker under the covers and stay warm, were praying for all of you, kindly keep us posted,as best you can.

Power came back on for us overnight Thursday night. A lot of downed trees in the area and starting today we have gasoline rationing. :stars:

wake-up call...........

The stories coming out of NY/NJ should remind the rest of us that we really DO need to have a week's worth of food, water, etc. ready. All sorts of things can and do happen, and winter weather just makes everything worse.:myopinion:

We finally got power back tonight! Man, it feels good to be back and to have heat again! It is amazing what we take for granted, isn't it? Anyway, we faired quite well, with no damage. However, we were not far from some of the hard hit areas. We are only a couple of miles from Little Ferry, Moonachie and South Hackensack, which were hit quite hard by a tidal surge from the Hackensack River. And we are well aware of the property damage and loss of life suffered within a twenty to fifty mile radious of here. We consider ourselves very lucky! Thanks to everyone that had us in their thoughts and prayers, it could have been alot worse.

I understand that fully. In Iowa, April 1973 there was a huge snowstorm, 15-18" of smowfall. I was born in January 1974. I know what my parents were doing during that storm.

Wayne's OK......

I appreciate your concerns. I’ve been slow to respond because I was working for three weeks in China and only returned yesterday. Although I had been in contact with my wife and others, being half a world away when a storm hits doesn’t make it less stressful. Fortunately, we sustained little damage to our property.

For those who don’t know me, I live just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. That’s about halfway between the PCS’ Northeast and Mid-Atlantic chapters. It’s about 60 miles inland from Atlantic City, which sustained a lot of damage. Being that far inland probably allowed the storm to lose some velocity, and the Philly area fared better than New York.

In addition to PCS, I am a member of local chapters of AACA, POCI, and GTOAA. I have heard of some members who were hit very hard, but those people generally live farther north and east of me. Now that I am back, I will be catching up on some more of their personal accounts. Again, thank you for your concerns, but I am OK!

I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving, and good luck with your automotive endeavors, PCS or otherwise. As for me, I’m looking ahead to attend the POCI Nationals next summer in Dayton, OH. If the next seven months go as I plan, I will show the ’86 Eagle hearse. Professional Pontiacs are generally well-received, since there aren’t that many of them. I hope to see some other Pontiac owners from PCS as well.

Best regards,
Wayne Guy

WOW Wayne, talk about stress. I can't imagine coming home right after a major storm. Hope everything gets all fixed up good as new soon.
THANX for the update!

Our home in Warwick, New York is right on the New Jersey border, putting us about 55 miles northwest of Manhattan, maybe 40 miles northwest of Bill & Lucille Marcy's home in Hackensack, NJ and 20 miles straight north of the Hookways' Lafayette home base. As Lisa & I only lost power intermittently the Monday night Hurricane Sandy actually made landfall, we've had ten days of non-stop cable news to remind us how lucky we are relation to a lot of other people in the New York metro region. While the worst we personally had to endure was the toppling of several trees on our three acres and loss of maybe a dozen roof shingles we've already had replaced - it PAID to call my contractor by midday Tuesday to secure a place in line - my parents, who live in the Westchester County directly north of NYC, toughed it out for nearly a week without power before they threw in the towel and hit up their travel agent to find them a hotel room in Yonkers. Con Ed got their lights back on a couple of days ago, but they nonetheless hung onto their hotel room just in case last night's encore Nor'Easter turned them off again (incredibly, Lisa and I were lucky yet again beyond the Ramapo Mountains, getting about two inches of snow overnight but none of strong winds we were worried about). Who do I know had real trouble thanks to Sandy? My attorney, joined by his wife and infant son, had to be evacuated from Hoboken, though their home was not in that part of town that became Venice on the Hudson. The woman who serves as my father's Lehigh University Development Office contact has a brother in Monmouth Beach who lost EVERYTHING, while a Russian emigre friend of mine e-mailed me about restorers after the GAZ Volga he brought over here from back home got filled with water. If this is as bad as things get in my immediate circle of relatives, friends and hobby contacts, I definitely dodged a bullet. My most fervent wish for all PCS people perusing this thread is no real harm has befallen them or their loved ones; alas, it's still possible there are folks without electricity or Internet access in our circle we have yet to hear from. Keep your fingers crossed and your prayers accordingly vocal!
