New problem - Heater selector switch and display

Today's problem lies with the fan control of heater control panel in my 67 Pontiac Superior.

As I turn the fan control knob, the selector display window will show OFF, NORMAL, REAR and DEFROST. The knob and the display are two seperate devices linked together by a tread. The problem is that the tread is broken, therefore preventing the selector to displar which mode th ststem is in.

Can I replace this tread by a fine fishing wire, or what better material do you suggest I could use?

I'm thinking a rubber band kind of thing like used for the kids hair would be what you need. the knot might not make the pulley or slip. you get it apart and bet your wife can think of something. a reguale rubber band woun't last but the hair ones are made of better stuff.

A rubber band will most likely not work. Both pulleys at 90 degees from eachother and the path is through a small hole in the casing. I'll try to post a picture later today.

then it just travels over and back. if you center the knot it would most likly not get into the groves. any heavy thread that would fit the groves would work be sure to glue the knot to keep it from getting loose.

I fixed the problem with the broken string using a small diameter fishing line. The question is now will it stretch, something that time will tell.

The only issue to resolve with the heater control is now the cable that controls the heat. The plastic clip that holds the cable housing in place on the heater control is broken, so that then I increase or decrease the heat, the whole cable assembly, not the cable inside the housing moves, therefore not doing anything.

I will probably have to purchace a new cable.

that the normal fix is to replace it because the the molded on plastic holder broke. some times if there is enough left one can wrap a piece of wire around the cable and drill a hole threw the tab of the clip and form a new loop on wire to screw to the housing. all you need is enough to hold the outside shield so the cable will work the leaver. I have fashioned a tab of thin steel around the cable and drilled a hole in the tab to screw it down but unless you can catch at least part of the plastic with the screw it will just slide. one has to ge tinventive on these plastic parts we are going to run out of replacments.

that heavy fishing line should work good for the indicator.
