Nancy Reagan hearse

I'm proud to say SCI-DIGNITY is taking care of the Reagan Family. I've heard SCI has a team totally dedicated to these high profile funerals with arrangements made and rehearsed for a few years. Do you think there is a second hearse in case the first one has mechanical issues....

The firm I worked for always had a backup hearse at the end of the procession or traveling parallel to the procession. Looking at the tape of the motorcade the last vehicle was a hearse but not a current model.

But a much better looking hearse!

Kindly keep us posted as to the funeral/burial, up here we usually only get a 30 second blurb on our news, and funerals such as this interest me,not to get political but she played a major role in his presidency even more than they will admit RIP Nancy.

I heard ABC News will carry the funeral live. A hearse will probably not be used since the burial is at the Museum.

Like during the Rosa Parks Funeral the '40 LaSalle coach (unable to find online the name of the FH that owned it though) ran out of gasoline during the procession and had to be pushed. Unfortunately that part was shown on the news that evening.

I thought the '40 stalled out because there was a problem with the charging system and the headlights drained the battery. With that being said I could see how it could run out of fuel if it didn't have a gauge.

At least on the news report I hears it ran out of gas due to the length of time it was left running and the distance driven.

In either case it still was unfortunate.

I should know about vehicle failures, I smoked an ambulance's engine once while transporting four patients from a MVA. Broke a alternator belt, nicked the lower radiator hose. We were about 30 miles from the hospital and no other car available. Didn't expect to cut the hose, I had never damaged one before or since with that type of failure.

Always a first time though........

Does anyone know what kind of casket she is being buried in. It looks heavy and expensive.

Marsellus Masterpiece. The same one her husband was buried in. Here's a list of other notable people buried in Marsellus caskets

The funeral Home that handled Rosa Parks funeral was the Swanson funeral home of Detroit.

The list of people buried in Marcellus caskets shows Cardinal Bernardin of Cincinnati. He was the head of the Chicago archdiocese. I believe Blake Lamb Funeral Home of Chicago handled his funeral.

If you think the pallbearers were lifting, you are correct--I think that casket weighs about 550lbs. Does anyone know the firm selected?

a "Masterpiece"

the Marcellus Casket Co. in New York formerly offered the "Masterpiece", an absolutely magnificent 3" plank solid African Mahogany unit. Long story short, but the unit is now a Batesville casket, identical to one used for her husband, Ronald Reagan. The casket would require an over-sized burial vault, due to its extra width.

As Dan pointed out, it is indeed a Marsellus and a REAL Syracuse-buillt one at that. It is a Marsellus M700 Masterpiece casket... the same model as used for President Reagan. Gates Kingsley Gates Funeral Home who is handling the services, stored this casket 13 years to be sure Nancy Reagan got the same casket made by the same maker that was used for President Reagan.

As stated earlier, the casket selected was the M700 Marsellus Masterpiece as noted. The complete description is as follows:

M700 Solid African Mahogany/Hand Polished Provincial Finish, 23”
62 Rose Tan Vel Allure Velvet
425 Center, Plain Puffing on 3 Sides
700 VB 1 ½” handles 4x0

The Marsellus Masterpiece casket was crafted from 12/4, 10/4, and 8/4 West African Ribbon Grain Mahogany (usually from Ghana). Every nail in the casket was made from solid copper. Every screw was made from solid brass. The sides and ends of the casket were assembled using wooden dowels…old time cabinetry. There were 57 different wooden component parts. The caskets, sans the President, weighed in at 454 pounds.

Marsellus M700 Masterpiece caskets had previously been chosen for the funeral services of many U.S. Presidents as well as a diverse group including…Mickey Mantle (NY Yankees), Industrialist Amon Carter, Jr.; Rapper Chris “Biggie Smalls” Wallace; Socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post; Billy Martin (NY Yankees); etc.

So...12 1/2 years after Marsellus was "assassinated" by SCI and forced to close its 131- year-old doors it "reached out from the grave" to grab one more noteworthy funeral. Rather amazing when you think about it.

I had the grey 1994 Buillac hearse that was used on the Cardinal's funeral. I still have the pair of Illinois license plates that were on the coach during the service.

Thanks Keith. This is interesting information. I did not know that Amon Carter was buried in the Masterpiece. For those interested, Amon Carter was responsible for great growth in Tarrant County including convincing General Dynamics to build in Fort Worth and GM to build in Arlington. He was also instrumental in the building of DFW airport. All of this was accomplished while he ran the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

The Rest Of The Casket Story

A well-connected associate of mine just sent me the following note:
"I just got off the phone with John Marsellus. It seems that the casket used for Nancy Reagan carried a "Marsellus by Batesville" label. Let me reassure you that this casket WAS a real Marsellus casket made in Syracuse. It seems that SCI sent the casket that had been stored at Gates-Kingsley-Gates to Batesville, Mississippi for refurbishing about a year ago when Nancy Reagan began to fail. During the casket's time in Mississippi the original Marsellus label was apparently damaged and replaced by a "Marsellus by Batesville" label...convenient, huh!
Batesville upper management and the highest levels of SCI all support this account. All agree with the Syracuse pedigree for the Reagan M700 Masterpiece. That said, who made the Nancy Reagan casket will likely be debated by the lesser informed for decades to come. It will likely rank alongside 'Who killed Kennedy", the faked Moon Landing, and "Where is Amelia Earhart?" wherever Funeral Directors gather. We have it on good authority that the controversy is already in the wind on social media. At least you will know the "rest of the story". So, there you go.

Watched what I could on the tube and on line ,a very fitting tribute for a classy lady,as for the weight of the casket noticed 8 pallbearers, precision was impeccable.
