I believe the reason for the "any color as long as it is black" had to do with the quality of paint in that era, and the time it took the paint to dry. Black was easier to deal with, and using only black helped speed up production. Sociologists, economists and historians contiue to analyze the wide-spread effects on our society wrought by Ford's production processes and the "car culture" he spawned.
