Membership question

I have a question regarding membership. I am a disabled paramedic since 2009 (lung cancer and now heart failure all in the past two years). I started in the ambulance profession in 1971 and worked out of many auto based ambulances in the 70s. When the vans became popular, there wasn't any choice but to go with them. I have been collecting pics (online) and have developed quite a nice collection and am always looking for more. Do you have a honorary membership level for someone who devoted his whole life to the profession?

Well i can't answer that question... but i'm in Bucyrus too & would be glad to let you visit my collection sometime!

You may recognize Carl's firetruck in the background Steve

Dwayne, I know Carl very well. I had the pic that you posted but lost it and have been looking for it in my files. Thanks for outting it on. I was on the staff whe Byrd Ambulance Service opened in Bucyrus in 1973. The day we opened, the fleet consisted of: Unit 13 - 1973 Superior 61 - Chevy Wide Body Van
14 - 1971 Superior Cadillac Combination
15 - 1967 Miller Meteor Combination.
In 1974, we went switched back to a Caddy fleet
Unit 13 - 1969 Superior 51
14 - 1974 Superior Cadillac COmbination
15 - 1971 Superior 54
The hitops had been based in some of our other bases and were replaced with newer units there. We ran these until 1976 when the hitops were replaced with Cotner Bevington hitops on Olds chassis. These units were every bit as nice as the Caddys.

I now reside in Tiffin but still have family in Bucyrus

Steve: I don't believe we do, but probobaly should under the circumstances in your case as is done with several other hobby clubs I belong to. I will be (honored) to pay your dues for 2011 in the National PCS and also the Ohio Chapter. Please send your (mailing) address to me at Mike@McDonaldWestern.com
I will immediately forward your application along with two checks to the National PCS and Ohio Chapter right away. Mike McDonald

Welcome Steve

Steve,
I don't know why but your name sounds familiar. Jess Byrd's company was infamous if you ever worked for a private in Ohio. I believe Jess may have been one of the founders of the Ohio Ambulance Association. I worked for Bob Smith at Alliance Ambulance and Dan Becker at Gold Cross Ambulance before switching to a law enforcement career. I think you will agree the job was a lot more pleasant working out of sedans rather than these trucks the kids drive around today. Even the vans we drove like the Superior 61 were better than these U-Hauls with fancy paint jobs and their sissy self loading cots. Welcome aboard, if there is anyway you can swing it, we would love to see you in Hudson in July. It is going to be a pretty big deal.

Mike, I know you are not looking for an adaboy, but that is a nice gesture. You are a true gentleman.

A very big thank you

I am very grateful to Mike for his contributions. I sure miss serving as a paramedic. AS it is approaching two years now since my lung surgery, my heart seems to be having problems. I would trade any of the newer truck ambulances for a Superior 54XL any day. That was my favorite Pro Car ambulance. It has been exciting to find a great many vintage pics on this sight.

I worked for Jess over 18 years. Some friends of mine started up a new service and I went with them. I remember meeting Dan Becker at a OAA meeting as well as Eric Voth from P&S Akron and numerous other owners. Jess did take great pride in his services.
