Importing Vehicles into the US

While I am aware of the process for importing cars from the US into Canada, can anyone tell me what is involved with importing into the US from Canada. I have a 71 Dodge W300 pickup that I imported from PA and am now selling back into the US.

My experience

Hi, Dean.

Back in '89 I moved from Canada to the U.S., and brought a '79 Superior Cadillac transport ambulance with me. I spent less than 10 minutes at customs with this car. They checked for a sticker on the rad cradle which confirmed that this car was manufactured in the U.S., and therefore met all applicable requirements. While I was getting my paper work done, another party who was moving to the U.S. at the same point of entry tried to bring in a new vehicle that she had recently purchased in Canada. She was told that this was a "no-go."

This info is over 20 years old, so things may have changed. In addition, I wasn't exporting this vehicle for resale. You, or the buyer/importer, may have to deal with some other red tape under your circumstances.

There should be no problem as long as the ownership papers are in order, since this is a simple repatriation of the vehicle. In the 1960's cars were manufactured in Canada for sole distribution in the US by an agreement with the two governments. In exchange for the US taking Canadian built cars, Canada was to take US built cars that were not available of Canadian manufacturing, such as the full size Buick's and Cadillacs. I don't know how well this worked out for either side, but I do remember the Maple Leaf decals that were installed on the doors. I wonder if those cars could be repatriated to Canada without a problem???

In 1997 or so I imported an Buick LeSabre for personal use to the US. I bought the cream puff in Ontario and brought it to the States. My memory tells me the 11 digit in the vin number is in question. It happened to be an H. The H stated that the majority of the vehicle was made in the states which meant it was US goods returned. Specifically 51% of the car was from the states. Thus I did not have to pay anything-duty etc. It was not a problem. I did press my dealer friend foot to the fire to call GM Canada do gain some info. I can not remember the specifics other than there was a $40 fee that was paid to GM Canada. Good luck it's not that big of a thing just talk with them-if you live near the border stop in and ask them. They were very helpful.

you can pay a broker to do all of the paperwork and importing the car in the states should go smoothly that way. i think i paid the broker 300-500 to get my 56 imported back to the states about a year ago
