Importing Procar from Canada

Does anyone have recent experience in importing a procar from Canada that was exported previously from the USA? 1970's vintage.

Is this something that you can do yourself or is it better to use an importer?
If using an importer is the best way, can you make a recommendation?

Are there any pointers or advice that you have?

This has been discussed here before. If the vehicle was originally manufactured in the US to meet US EPA and NHTSA requirements (where applicable), it can be returned to the US, regardless of how long it spent in Canada. The customs officials will open the hood, look for the appropriate sticker on top of the rad cradle, and you're on your way.

I exported a '79 Superior transport ambulance from Canada into the US back in '89, and my brother and I exported a '73 S&S Medic Mark 1 back into the US after originally bringing it into Canada a few years earlier. A '62 M-M Cadillac ambulance and a 66 Superior Rescuer that we had also brought into Canada in the late '70's also ended up back in the US, and a '75 Criterion that i owned for a while in Canada also crossed back in the states, although it was returned to Canada a second time many years later.

There was no need to use a broker at that time, although things may have changed.

Listing off all these cars sure brought back some great memories!

As Terry says, 9/10 times it should be very straight forward. (There is always the one). I would suggest you contact US Border Services and get the full low down. Also ask if it has to clear Canadian Customs. Cars coming US to Canada have to clear both, with the US requiring more for it to leave than for it to enter Canada.

I had researched previous posts but they seemed to be before cash for clunkers and I was more interested about EPA requirements. Because, as usual, the CBP website discusses customs requirements, EPA require documents and NHTSA requirements. All of which are not clear.

That is why I am looking for recent experience to help navigate any mine fields. Hopefully it is as easy as everyone's previous experience.

I drove my 1969 Superior Ambulance across the border at Niagara Falls. I needed to have the car enter the states officially so I could export it to Australia via New Jersey. As I recall I had one form that had all the particulars of the vehicle the the border guys signed and stamped. They couldn't of been more helpful and I think they actually enjoyed helping me with it all.

I have a 1978 Plymouth Fury Royal Canadian Mounted Police car and when I sent a friend with a trailer to bring it home from Canada through Buffalo he was worried. Upon arrival at the border he was asked to show the title fill out a form after which "Have a nice day". He said Customs was friendly helpful he was shocked.

Thanks for the information, so did the vehicle have an actual title or a Canadian registration? Did you have to pay any duty on the car?
