Finding a mate to it will be hard. As far as the balance weights i always had a problem when i had my shop. The guys just took the rim mounted a new tire and "balanced it". Usually what you got was what you see in eds photo. I finally put a stop to it by [1] scraping the old bubble balancer and geting a spin balancer and also [2] making sure the rim was cleaned before mounting the tire. But thats back when pride of workmanship and customer service had meaning. Set that tire aside some day its mate will come, seriously :)

Do OLD bias ply or bias belted tires not fall apart like 7 year old radials? That tire must be 40 years old.

I haven't driven on anything but radials since I had a 1970 VW Beetle in the early 80s. That had not just snowtires on the back, but retreaded snowtires.

to answer the question no. neither did radials of 20 year ago. my guess on the age of this one is on the duel lettering it says n-78 x 15 replaces 890. as I recall they went to the lettering size sometime in the mid 60s. we were getting tires labeled like this then. I was working at a standard station when that change came threw.

I can't tell you when tires started having a shelf life. but ones like this keep out of the sun are good to go. as Gus said it was most likely balanced with a bubble balancer and it being a snow tire and studded put the heavy spot out on the edge.then begin a heavy load rating doesn't help either. the first thing that should have been done is the tire broken down and rotated 180. normal that will help with the amount of weight needed

How right you are about break down and rotate and rebalance. Remember the days when we had time to do it correctly? At least they use Cadillac weights so the wheel cover would fit if needed.

Today they would just use the generic wheel weights and a bigger rubber hammer!!

my though when I saw it was thank you I now have plenty of them I can trim. there is about 10 oz on the back side also.

the joy of a bubble balancer. still liked the rolling the tire off by hand. I have had two wheels bent on these new tire changers. I never did enjoy the split rims or the taking apart a truck tire by hand. we had a drive on hoist what we would slide the tires under to blow them up. never did lose one but one of the other guys did.
