hard to start engine

My internal combustion expertise is limited, so I need some troubleshooting help. 1970 Olds 98 chassis, C-B cotington laundau will not start. olds 455 rocket engine. Never had starting problem starting before other than after sitting over the winter. starter cranks and trys to start engine, but wont get it running. checked battery, and tried using Kia van as supplemental battery power, but no luck. First time in eight years it wont start since I have owned vehicle.

Any suggestions, resources, or places to look would be appreciated.

Thanks, Gary K.

to eliminate the problems. try to prime it first if it fires on the prime and dies right away it a fuel problem. if it doesn't it's most lily a electrical problem. if your not of a mechanical nature then it may be something best left for someone that is. one can end up costing themselves a lot more tinkering around.

how may miles are on the engine? Pop the dist. and check and see if the dist. is turning. It could have jumped time or the gear on the dist has sheered off if the oil pump has froze up. That is what happened to me. Just an idea to look at. If everything is working, check your points the dwell should be around 30, and check your plugs, I had a set get fouled out with fuel and after I changed them it started and ran fine. :my2cents:

3 things a motor needs to run. Gas, air & spark. Check those 3 things first. That will guide you to troubleshoot the problem.

put about a ounce of gas into the intake, then see if the car will start.

If not, pull a plug and see if your getting a spark.

Whats the air filter look like?

Old gas is the most likely problem.. Siphon it out, or do as Russ suggested and put some fresh gas into the carburetor. If it starts and runs, then let it get warm, and then drive it down to the filling station and put some gas into it. Make sure to use the car and start it occasionally during the winter. Cars don't like stale gas..
